Question about 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

Car died while I was driving home and will not start now. (2.2 L, 170K miles). Starter is working and battery/alternator are good. Check engine light is on and gave "Camshaft Position Sensor A - Bank 1 Circuit Low Input" error. I replaced Camshaft Position Sensor and that did nothing. I've checked all my fuses. I can hear the fuel pump when I turn the key and I've checked to make sure I'm getting spark from the plug wires. A few people have suggested the timing chain could be bad. Is there a way to check without taking the timing chain cover off? Any other suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Fuel filter hadn't been changed in a while so I replaced it. While I had the filter off, I placed a container under the fuel line and turned the key to engage the fuel pump and verified that fuel was indeed being pumped. I didn't have any starting fluid so I put some gas in a spray bottle and sprayed it into the air cleaner and it still wouldn't start.

I went ahead and started tearing into it to see if it was the timing CHAIN. (Which involves taking off the alternator and bracket, power steering pump, engine mount, etc). Anyway, the timing CHAIN did break. I've already put on a new timing set (chain, gears, and tensioner) and am in the process of putting everything back together. Hopefully it'll be done in the next few days.

You would have to take the numbe 1 plug out and take the valve cover off .. first run the engine up on the timing mark to tdc the piston should be at top dead center meaning all the way up .. Now with the valve cover off you can check to make sure the valves on number one are closed. if this is the case then your timing is right and your belt or chain is ok... if you have problems with this let me know thanks jerry .. btw did you shoot a little starting fluid into the air cleaner to make SURE its getting fuel ? i now you said the fuel pump was making a noise but you didnt say for sure if there was fuel pressure ? thanks jerry

when trying to start it does it kick back or act differently while cranking /? this is usually a sign of a timing belt bad ..

You may have a bad alternator. Car died while driving, either gas or fire. if you know about MAFS your should know how to check starter function by jumping solenoid to large post of battery. Check for 12V at the large post on starter. Then try to jump the two connections. If car cranks, I would check ignition circuit for faults.

Sounds like the alternator is shot. The alternator charges the battery when you re driving and also gives power to the engine and accessories. If this dies the car will run on battery power until it dies.

sounds like the head or head gasket is blown. your cylinders may be getting coolant in them which will not only cause the motor to lockup, but also cause bent rods and valves. check your oil dipstick and transmission dipstick to see if it looks like water or coolant is presant, also check the coolant to see if it smells like gas or has any kind of oil in it, if so, your head is likely blown.

Dies after running about 2 minutes

It's got all the symptoms of a leak in the fuel line. You may want to start backward at the tank and work your way all the way to the carb to find it but it would be surprising if it was something else. All the best.

Engine will not start

Your battery is dead, that's why the starter is not starting the engine. Install a new battery or jump the car, if it still doesn't run, lpease repose problem with more details of the status.
