This isnt a hard job at all really but you will need a sensor socket. About $25..or some big chain part stores have a free loaner program..ie Advance Auto parts...Autozone..

P0421 code


"FWIW, according to the Mazda factory service manual, the P0421 code indicates "Warm up catalyst system efficiency below threshold".

The DETECTION CONDITION for this code indicates "Number of heated oxygen sensor (rear) inversion becomes closer to that of heated oxygen sensor (front)".

POSSIBLE CAUSES are:

Warm up three way catalytic converter deterioration
Leakage exhaust system
Heated oxygen sensor (front) malfunction
Heated oxygen sensor (rear) malfunction
Mass air flow sensor malfunction
Throttle position sensor malfunction
Vehicle speed sensor malfunction"
I copied the above from a discussion group on the PO421 code. The code can be caused by any of the above listed problems. The vehicle should be further inspected and diagnosed, so you do not have components replaced that do not need to be replaced.

Removal & Installation

Raise and support the vehicle.
Support rear of the powertrain frame.
Remove four rear frame bolts.
Lower the frame no more than 73.2 mm (3 inches).
Disconnect the rear oxygen sensor electrical connector.
Remove the rear oxygen sensor from the rear exhaust manifold.

To install:

Install the rear oxygen sensor in the rear exhaust manifold. Tighten the rear heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) sensor to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
Connect the rear oxygen sensor connector.
Raise the frame.
Install the four rear frame bolts. Tighten the frame bolts to 100 Nm (74 ft. lbs.).
Lower the vehicle.


Heated Oxygen Sensor Bank 1 Sensor 1 (HO2S 1/1)

WARNING: Handle the oxygen sensors carefully in order to prevent damage to the component. Keep the electrical connector and the exhaust inlet end free of contaminants. Do not use cleaning solvents on the sensor. Do not drop or mishandle the sensor.

CAUTION: Remove oxygen sensors with the engine temperature above 48C (120F). Otherwise the oxygen sensors may be difficult to remove.

Location of oxygen sensor on 2004 blazer check engine light keeps coming on. Replaced sensor no change. At bank 1 sensor is not connected when tested.


Removal & Installation

Raise and support the vehicle.

P0421 = Catalyst System Efficiency below Threshold(Bank1) The catalyst's efficiency is demonstrated by its ability to oxidize CO and hydrocarbon emissions. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) compares the output signals of the front and rear oxygen sensors to determine whether the output of the rear sensor is beginning to match the output of the front oxygen sensor. Air/fuel mixture compensation keeps the frequency of the front oxygen sensor high due to the changes from rich-to-lean combustion. The catalyst causes the rear oxygen sensor to have a lower frequency. As the catalyst wears, the rear oxygen sensor's signal trace begins to match the front oxygen sensor's signal trace. That is because the catalyst becomes saturated with oxygen and cannot use the oxygen to convert hydrocarbon and CO into H???O and CO??? with the same efficiency as when it was new. A completely worn catalyst shows a 100% match between the frequency of the front and rear sensors.

The oxygen sensor may be difficult to remove when the engine temperature is below 120°F (48°C). Excessive force may damage the threads in the exhaust manifold of exhaust pipe.
  1. Start the engine and let it warm up to 120°F (48°C), stop the engine and disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Detach the electrical connector from the oxygen sensor.
  3. Using a special, oxygen sensor socket, remove the oxygen sensor from the exhaust manifold or exhaust pipe.


NOTE A special anti-seize compound is used on the oxygen sensor threads. The compound consists of liquid graphite and glass beads. The graphite will burn away, but the glass beads will remain, making the sensor easier to remove. New or service sensors will already have the compound applied to the threads. If an oxygen sensor is removed from the engine and if for any reason, it is to be reinstalled, the threads must have this anti-seize compound applied before installation.
  1. Coat the threads of the oxygen sensor with anti-seize compound 5613695 or equivalent.
  2. Install the sensor and tighten it to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  3. Reattach the electrical connector to the sensor and the negative battery cable.

On the SOHC engine the front (A/F) oxygen sensor is located in the front section of the front catalytic converter. The rear oxygen sensor is located in the rear section of the front catalytic converter. On the DOHC engine the front oxygen sensor is located in the front section of the exhaust system, just past the crossover pipe. The rear oxygen sensor is located in the front section of the catalytic converter.

On the 2.0L engine the front (A/F) oxygen sensor is located in the front section of the exhaust system, just past the crossover pipe. The rear oxygen sensor is located in the front section of the rear catalytic converter. On the 2.2L engine the front (A/F) oxygen sensor is located in the front section of the front catalytic converter. The rear oxygen sensor is located in the rear section of the rear catalytic converter.

How To Change Oxygen Sensors in 2002 Mercedes C240 Sedan?


I do not know the part numbers but you have 4 sensors. 2 pre and 2 post catalytic converter. The pre sensors are the most sensitive and are generally the ones to fail. the rear sensors usually have a heater circuit problem. If your just replacing them for routine service interval I would just do the fronts. They connect to the engine wire harness in the front of the transmission pan. You may need an o2 sensor socket to remove the fronts. They are just a 22mm. in size.

DESCRIPTION
The Engine Control Module (ECM) uses oxygen sensor signals to maintain the air fuel mixture at the ratio resulting in optimum fuel economy and reduced emissions. The amount of oxygen in the exhaust gases indicates, to the front oxygen sensor, whether the air fuel mixture being supplied to the engine cylinders is rich or lean. The readings of the rear oxygen sensor are used to indicate the efficiency of the catalytic converter. The ECM calculates catalytic convener efficiency by comparing the rear oxygen sensor signal to the front oxygen sensor signal.

A normal oxygen sensor signal will constantly fluctuate above and below 500 mV , with the front oxygen sensor signal frequency of at least 5 Hz at 2500 RPM . Due to the effect of the catalytic converter, the rear oxygen sensor signal frequency will be lower than the front oxygen sensor signal frequency. If the rear oxygen sensor signal coincides with the front oxygen sensor signal a large percentage of the time, this indicates a loss in efficiency of the catalytic converter or a malfunction within the fuel system.

FAILURE CONDITIONS
After the engine runs for 2 minutes , the ECM checks the rear oxygen sensor heater circuit. If during two driving cycles the rear oxygen sensor's heater resistance is less than 4.6 Ohms or greater than 19.5 Ohms , the ECM will set P0141 and MIL will turn on. This code indicates an unusually high or low heater circuit resistance reading by the rear oxygen sensor or ECM.
