Question about GMC Sierra 1500

2 Answers

Ignition switch I have an 86 GMC SIERRA 1500 305 engine 5.0 V8. I went to start my truck the other day and my lights would come on but when I turn the key nothing happens! All I hear is a clicking sound coming from under my dash! My battery is in good working order and I have checked all the wires running to the cylonoid! I then turned my key to the on position and placed a screwdriver between the two bolts on the cylonoid and it fired right up! Is this a problem with the ignition switch? If so how do you change it out?

The Switch is bolted about half way down the steering column on the top I believe. You will have to remove the plastic cover beneath the steering wheel to get to it. Unplug wiring connector from the switch and remove two bolts holding it to the steering column there is a long rod coming from the cylinder lock that hooks into switch, it should come right out after bolts are removed. It will help if you are a contortionist and have very small fingers :)

When you turn the key, is there 12v at the small wire on the solenoid? If there isn't you have either a bad neutral safety switch or ignition switch (stick shift uses a clutch switch) Sometimes a bad solenoid will do this as well. In that case there will be 12v at the small wire but the starter won't react.

Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.

Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON, vehicle will not start.

My 1999 gmc truck with v8 350 moter will only start with starting fluid

It is very common that the fuel pump goes out on these. Try a fuel pressure gauge to check, or have someone put their ear close to the fuel tank when you turn the ignition switch forward (Not cranking) You should hear it cycle on for about 5 seconds
