how do I check starter relay?

  • trucknmama37 Apr 14, 2009

If the starter relay is in the box attached to the battery box, then yes I checked that..took the horn relay and put it in the starter place, but still doing same thing

I know the starter is good cause we swapped them with my husbands car..he also has a 97 only his is standard. The car has not had any problems starting.no sluggish starts. it even started right up that morning. I had run the car about 10 miles, shut it off talked to a friend for a little bit then when i came out to leave it just clicked. I mde hubby bring the starter from his car and he put it in..same thing happened..when he put my starter on his car it worked fine...so starter was not the problem.

Thank you e1 for all the help.. I got it figured out. It was the cable coming off the starter up to the battery...I replaced it, and it is running fine now...I found this out by putting a positive jumper cable from the positive side of the battery to the stud on the starter..(in other words I bypassed that cable) and it would fire rght up so I went and bought a new one...

How have you confirmed that the starter is good? Do you find that sometimes it feels like the battery is dead and does not have enough power to turn the engine despite the battery being fully charged?

My car will not start. The battery is new and has a full charge and turns everything on when I turn the key but when I try to start it, it will not do anything not even clicking noise.

if the battery is good it is NOT the alternator. the alternator charges the battery, if it won`t start with a new battery the alternator does nothing to affect the situation. check voltages at the starter motor connections for proper voltages even the wires that the ignition switch supplies power to. if you have proper voltages at the starter you can try hitting the starter while someone tries to start the car. if it starts the starter is worn internally and will have to be replaced.

Is my starter bad? When trying to start I hear a single click. Voltmeter shows a drop from about 12V to 8-9V while turning. Starter motor gets really hot, load wires between battery and starter get so...

check to see if you can turn the engine over by hand it maybe siezed and not turn over.this can cause this type of starter problem and voltage drop.check all grounds from the battery to engine block and body under the hood,if you have a bad ground it can cause a similar type problem.

1991 toyota truck relay clicks no starts

check battery cable connections. Dirty/corroded wil cause that condition. Headlights bright?
try starter with headlights on.If clicks and they dim slightly, have a friend TAP the starter with the key in the START position.
USE a long length of re bar or metal rod. Tap on the starter motor, like a pool cue. If the starter cranks on the first "tap",the starter should be replaced.
There are brushes inside the electric starter motor and when they get burned/worn,a slight tap jars the starter motor brushes just enough to make good contact.

2000 chevy venture new battery and is dead after leaving it parked over night

HAVE BATTERY RECHARGED OR VECHICLE JUMP START.WITH VECHICLE RUNNING MAKE SURE ALTERNATOR IS CHARGING THE BATTERY.ALTERNATOR OUT PUT AT BATTERY SHOULD BE 13.5 - 14.5 VOLTS.IF NOT CHECK ALTERNATOR FUSE.CHECK ALTERNATOR + BATTERY FEED WIRE AND VOLTAGE REGULATOR WIRES MAKE SURE NONE OF WIRES LOOSE BROKEN OR DISCONNECTED.IF ALL IS GOOD AND ALTERNATOR OUT PUT LOW ALTERNATOR FAULTY.IF ALTERNATOR VOLTAGE OUT PUT OKAY. YOUR BATTERY DRAIN PROBLEM COULD BE FAULTY AC HEATER BLOWER MOTOR RELAY.CHECK INSIDE CAR WITH THE IGNITION SWITCH OFF.MAKE SURE RADIO TURN OFF.INTERIOR LIGHTS TURN OFF.HEAD LIGHTS TURN OFF.LISTEN FOR ANY NOISES LIKE BLOWER MOTOR RUNNING, OR FAULTY DOOR LOCK SOLENOID CLICKING NOISE.IF EVERY THING SO FAR OKAY.OTHER POSSIBLE CAUSES BATTERY DRAINING COULD BE FAULTY ALTERNATOR,FAULTY STARTER SOLENOID CONTACTS SHORTING OUT.THE PCM COULD DRAIN BATTERY IF FAULTY.THE NEW BATTERY COULD BE DEFECTIVE.

I try to start my truck up which is a 2003 ford expedition and it makes a ticking noise! well i jus changed the starter and its still making that noise. could it be the alternator or whats the problem?

The starting system consists of:
  • starter motor
  • starter switch, part of the ignition switch
  • digital transmission range (TR) sensor (automatic transmission-equipped vehicles)
  • starter motor solenoid relay switch
  • starter solenoid
  • starter drive
When you turn your key to start your engine, it just clicks, right? If so, more than likely this is due to a bad battery. Even though your battery may appear to be fully charged, it may have a dead cell, or worse. If you get a jump, does the vehicle start? If so, replace your battery.

Possible sources of the problem if the engine does not crank or the relay clicks:
  1. Battery
  2. Starter motor
  3. Starter motor relay
  4. Ignition switch
  5. Damaged fuse
  6. Anti-theft system
  7. Circuitry

2004 Pontiac Aztek has been through a new battery that actually did have problems and has now drained another new battery. Alternator has tested as good and starter works well. Any help would be...

BATTERY DRAIN CAN BE CAUSED BY SHORT IN PCM OR FAULTY DOOR LOCK SWITCH. RADIO STAY ON, INTERIOR LIGHT REMAIN ON CAUSE,POWER DRAIN TO BATTERY ALSO A BAD BLOWER MOTOR RELAY.WHEN YOU TURN OFF VECHICLE STAY AND CHECK AROUND TO SEE WHAT RAMAIN ON.YOU WILL FIND BATTERY DRAIN.

2000 chevy s10 starter clicks

The cause of that could be;

1. A low battery, check it to make sure that the battery does have 12 volts. There might be a draw on the battery or the alternator may have quit charging the battery, see if the vehicle will jump-start and if it does start then check the voltage at the battery and it should be reading 14 to 16 volts if the alternator is charging the battery properly, but an internally shorted battery can cause similar conditions, and if the battery casing is bulged out then the battery is most likely not any good..

2. Low voltage/amperage to the starter motor because of a bad connection at the starter or the battery. Check the battery cables for loose cables or corroded connections and make sure that the battery connection are clean and they are not corroded.

3. The starter motor brushes are worn out and the starter motor will not turn, if you can tap on the rear of the starter housing while someone is holding the key in the start position sometimes the starter motor will turn the engine over, if that is the case then you should replace the starter.

4. A faulty ignition switch.

5. The engine has siezed up, I have seen it happen before but we do want to think about that, however it is another remote possibility.

REPLACE THE POSITIVE BATTERY CABLE.BESURE TO BUY SOME FLEXIBLE WIRE CONDUIT.PROTECT WIRE FROM RUBBING CAUSING SHORT.ALSO REPLACE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE.DUE TO YOUR CAR BEING PCM CONTROL BY DISCONNECTING NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE WILL CAUSE STARTING PROBLEMS AND STEERING PROBLEMS WITH NEWER CARS WITH ELECTRIC POWER STEERING.LET VOLKSWAGON DEALER REPLACE CABLES AND STARTER.
