Question about 1991 Volkswagen Cabriolet

Transmissions with different codes? Are they interchangeable?

I have an 89 Cabriolet and the standard trans went out. I checked the wrecking yards and there are three different codes for the vehicle and their manuals do not indicate that they are interchangeable. I called a local VW mechanic and he said that it didn't matter as long as it is the same body style. I don't want to buy a wrecking yard trans with a different code (as this is all I could locate) and find that it doesn't work. Any helps would be greatly appreciated.

Same body style, same fuel and size engine, different trans codes.

Your VW guy is right... the codes don't matter that much as long as the output flanges are the same size as your old one. Also make sure you are getting a five speed... there should be a green cover over the throwout bearing on the (driver's side) end. If not it's a four speed and you don't want that... Hope this helps ;-)

Output flanges are where the axles bolt up with six long bolts... when the axles are removed you will probably see the grease... I believe the two sizes are 100 mm and 110 mm... make sure they match your old one! ... oh and Duetche is right in that you don't want a trans from a diesel vehicle, but those do not have the green cover and are all 4 speeds ;-)

Buying parts at a wreckyard requires some knowledge and trust, and do only put a gearbox with the same codes as in your car, because if you get one to a diesel (fits perfect) then you cant use the 4 and 5 gear because it would be overgeared and your motor underpowered tork wise. Thou is it possible to fit a gearbox from a 1,6 litre engined car to a 1,8 litre engine and vice-versa with no big difference but if you get a 2,0 litre one you have problems, or if the gearbox is from a GTI, because the axels is larger on thoose models.

You should be able to obtain that info from a salvage yard. They have the interchange books for major components.

Will a 1994 4L60E camaro transmission fit into a 1999 chevy 1500 ?

I doubt it. Most of the time the truck trans has the mounts in a different place and the tail shaft is a different size.
A trans shop or a salvage yard should be able to tell you for sure. Salvage yards have interchange info.

I have several S10's from an 84 to a 99 which are all prone to both engine and trans failures. As either a trans or an engine went bad, I have kept them as parts trucks now I have a few that need...

the 2 wd and 4wd transmissions are not interchangeable. 95 - 2000 should be the same, 89 - 94 should be the same. check for an ID number on the trans pan, the newer ones should be 4L60E, the older ones could be 4L60 or 200R4. good luck!

99 Honda Accord and Prelude Transmissions Interchangeability

the trans will actually bolt up to the engine..but it will not work properly without the pressure switch plugged in to the harness... if u notice, there is a hole with no threads in the prelude trans..u couldnt even thread a 3rd gear pressure switch in the trans case..trust me ive seen it b4 at the dealer where i work.. i even went as far as installing the trans and when going back together, saw the difference when trying to plug the harness in...its not the same..i laugh about it now, but was very mad at myself at the time for assumeing the parts guy brought me the right part..the guy with the prelude was about to install my accord  trans in his prelude ...luckily i was able to stop him b4 he installed my trans in his prelude...i laugh about it now
