Question about 1985 Chevrolet Citation

1 Answer

1985 Chev Celebrity wont stay running

2.8 liter v6 with Rochester 2bl carb.
The car sputtered on a real cold winter day and barely made it home.Has not run since. I can spray starting fluid in the carb and it fires up and runs well until the spray is burnt off so it is getting spark. I replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter so the carb should be getting proper fuel pressure.

Q#1. How can I check the fuel pressure if the car wont stay running. Is there a way to fill the carb bowl with fuel (or check it) so it will run long enough to check fuel pressure.

Q#2.I had heard these have a mixture control solenoid on the carb and was wondering if this were to fail would it be enough to prevent the fuel from entering the carb so it wouldnt fire, or would it just run rough?

Thanks CCN7, I agree it seems to be something with the fuel. I will try disconnecting and turning over to see if fuel is coming from the pump. I also will try to remove the solenoid and see what happens.

I may go to pull r parts to get a used carb if the fuel pressure looks good.

The filter you chg. an inline filter? Is there a filter in the carb.where fuel line connects, some had a brass screan in the carb. you can chk. the fuel pressure without it running, just unhook line at carb. put it into a plastic bottle or something to catch it and have someone turn engine over if it squirts out good thats enought for it to run they only put out about 6 to 8 lbs. of pressure. I don't think that solenoid would keep it from running, when it will run on either. but maybe if you unplug it and see what happens. It suunds to me to be a fuel dilivery problem, either something restricting the flow to carb. or you got a bad pump.

My 1985 chevy 305 gets 4mi to the gallon

Check your ignition timing at 3500 rpm you should have about 40 degrees of advance If not, something is sticking in the distributor, either the vacuum or mechanical advance. This will cause a big reduction in fuel economy. Also, check your tire pressure. The cfm on a rochester is really not important. The primary bores are so small and they are the only thing allowing the mixture in most of the time.

Where does the vacuum advance line go on an old rochestor carb

Get a tee fitting for the size of the vaccum line and connect the advanced line into an existing line from the carb. Worked for me on one of my old cars.

How do i check if the fuel has air in it? 1985 golf gti 8v

What do you mean? In the fuel line? In the manifold? In the tank? In the engine/cylinders? Do you want to measure A/F mixture? I am guessing you are asking because your car wont start. I am also guessing it cranks and sputters to try to fire, but never catches and runs. Your 85 VW has three common things I'd check first. 1. The O2 sensor wires crack and the sensor quits working sending the car into limp home mode. 2. the cold start injector at the end of the plenum/intake is a 5th injector that richens the starting mixture until the car warms up... it can fail and the car will run like **** until it warms up and runs on the 4 normal injectors. 3. Before the intake plenum, the can shaped thingy with the metal flap/disc you may have tried jamming a screw driver in or pushing open with your finger is a metal flap that controls and senses incoming air and regulates the idle mixture. It has a few position sensors. Don't poke at this part or you will muck up some parameters that are difficult to re-align. If this is it, take the car to a VW mechanic. That little bugger is a real pain.
