No check engine light on. Replaced plugs but not wires.

I call it a miss as it will sputter, backfire and deaccelerate while attempting to climb hills. Again, this was near the end of a 3 1/2 hour trip. No problems while driving locally or short trips.

if your engine had a miss u would have a check engine light, (no exceptions) suggest u have this put on a diagnostic tester at the dealer.

Could be vapor lock in the fuel system. Next time it does this, stop and try removing the fuel filler cap... Hope this helps...;-)

Backfiring and miss in ford 4 liter

Hi Dwight, It would help to know more about your problem. What vehicle are you referring to? When does the backfire occur, during acceleration, deceleration, at a cruise speed, at idle? It would also help to know what vehicle, what engine and what fuel type? Regards John

95 chevy 1500 pops and backfires doesn't want to shift into overdrive when cold when it does the truck runs real rough

Have you checked the fuel pressure under a load, low pressure will cause these symptoms. The test port is on the top of the engine in the fuel supply rail to the fuel injectors, the fuel pressure test port looks like a large tire fill valve. You will need a fuel pressure test gauge to do this test (about $20), the pressure must be watched while you accelerate, it should never go down on hard acceleration just up about 6-8 PSI

2005 chevy equinox runs rough between approx 38 and 45 miles per hour. Changed plugs and wires as well as cleaned fuel injectors.

Please elaborate on "runs rough"
Is it slipping gears.... hesitating on acceleration... missing... smoking... backfiring?

Thanks!!

Sudden loss of power, Backfiring, starts then stalls

Your timing belt could be broken. You want to have this checked as soon as possible to prevent any further engine problems.
