Yup you will have to remove the whole dash, unhook batteries and wait 20 min, for air bags, unhook all wires ect from steering colum and remove the colum as an assy, behind the kick panels both sides you should see some bolts holding the dash to the kick panel (some will have a sloted holes so you dont have to remove the bolts just loosen them (this allows you to tilt the dash back away from the winshield) unhook all nessesary wiring, heater controls, stereo wires ect.. remove screw's securing the upper dash to firewall, tilt dash back and check for any other wiring ect.. remove intire dash! now you will need to remove the intire heater box to gain access to the heater core, you can pinch off the heater hose's so you wont have to drain the intire cooling system, some of the vans used a quick disconect right at the firewall and require a special release tool to release them almost impossible without the tool, once this is done you have to evacuate the ac system and unhook the lines, then you can remove the heater box( nuts on the firewall engine side) and dissasemble to gain access the the heatercore! (not for the faint at heart) some models can take as long as 16 hrs to r&r so if your asking about doing one means your not going to have fun! I recomend taking it to the shop and have it done by pro's, or at least spend the money and buy a repair manual
make shure you do it in a heated shop cuase if you fight it in the cold your apt to break some plastic! take your time and dont get frustrated, it will pay off, and always vacum test the new core before installing it to make dang shure it doesent leak before you install it! reasemble in the reverse order, this is just off the top of my head but gives you a general idea what your up against! have fun!

I believe the seats are bolted to the floor of the van. Make sure you unplug all electrical connections before removing the seats.

You'll need to crawl under the van and look at the exhaust pipes before the catalytic converter. You will see it once you take a peek.

My 1992 chevy g20 van surges and i'm not sure exactly why. I changed the pcv valve, fuel filter, spark plugs, and air filter. What are some possibilities

My first thought would be a vacuum leak in one of the hoses. Rubber hoses get brittle with age and even a small crack in a hose may cause surging. Happened to me in a Lumina.

How do u replace a heater core in a 1994 chevy g20 conversion van

If it is necessary to remove the heater assembly, the cooling system must be drained before removing the heater core.
When a heater core leaks, a new heater core is installed or the old one repaired.
Heater Housing
  • The heater housing is usually under the dash and must be removed to gain access to the heater core.
  • Procedures for replacing the heater core vary with the year, make, and model of car. It threfore necessary to consult the manufacturer's repair manuals for the proper procedure for replacement.
f74-01.gif The heater housing is disassembled to get to the heater core. Heater Core
  • Remove the access panels(s) or the split heater/air conditioning case to gain acess to the heater core.
  • Remove the heater coolant hoses.
  • Remove the cable and/or vacuum control lines (if equipped).
  • Remove the heater core securing brackets and/or clamps.
  • Lift the core from the case. Do not use force. Take care not to damage the fins of the heater core when removing.
  • To reinstall the heater core, reverse the removal steps.
When the heater core leaks and must be repaired or replaced, it is a very difficult and time-consuming job primarily because of the core's location deep within the firewall of the car. For this reason always leak test a replacement heater core before installation.

How do i replace heater core

I believe on a 1987 chevy van the heater core should be under the black plastic cover on the firewall on the left hand side as you are standing in front of the van.
I believe you can also get to it under the passenger side dash.
It is NOT fun. Unless you are a seasoned mechanic, I would not attempt it.
Otherwise stop by your local auto center, and get a HAYNES manual, they will be able to show how to.

there should be 3 places where the hoses connect on the Tee, see what ones are looped -one into the other, the heater core goes on these 2 in & out, the other goes to the rear air if equipped, such as in a conversion van.
