My speedometer in my car stopped working all of a sudden!
I put a new radio in and to wires touched and turned the car on. so we moved the wires and put the radio the rest of the way in. Then when we went off to work the speedometer just stopped working and i checked the fuses and still nothing, but then a day later the check engine light came on and the guys at Autozone could find the thing to plug the checker machine into so now at at the end of my rope and i really dont want to spend alot of money to fix a speedometer. Please someome tell me whats wrong with it. By the way its a 2000 Mistubishi Galant DE

Well, you learned the hard way, always disconnect the neg. battery cable before working on anything electric. (I've screwed things up trying to save a couple of minutes by not disconnecting the cable myself, sure I would be careful and not ground out anything!) Your diagnostic link plug in is under the dash on the driver's side, mounted on the passenger side of the steering column. Autozone should have been able to find it. Get the codes scanned to see what fried when the wires touched. If you have any questions, post the trouble code #'s here for further help. Good luck! Curt

I have seen several neons with this issue. The instruments will stop working on ocassion or all together. I have found that the instrument cluster or wiring connector to the cluster can become slightly loose causing the speedometer to stop working. I would recommend putting slight inward pressure on the cluster when this happens to see if it has any effect. If the speedometer starts working I would advise turning your attention to the plug on the back side of the cluster to remove the slight movement that the plug mount allows.
there is a regulator for the display brightness, you may have it turn'd down or it has stopped working;. it controls the brightness at which the dash lights are. usually has a speedo sign on it. goes up and down. it works with the main light and is conecter to them on the same lighting board if it has gone then a new light swtch control switch will be needed.
The problem is the radio change wasn't done properly. The first indication of that was when you said
"they changed the factory radio it and when you turn off the radio the speedometer works"
Other factory things commonly run through the radio even though you may not expect they would. I don't know what your wiring is like now. Did they hack the factory plug off? If not, it should be relatively easy to put the wiring back like it was. You could then either get a factory radio for that car cheap. Salvage yard, maybe ebay, maybe a friend has one laying around etc. You could seek out a proper wiring harness made to put an aftermarket radio in. Crutchfield is a great place to search for special harnesses.
If the plug has been hacked off and you just have wires hanging, you'll need to figure out what is what. Again, if you go to a Salvage yard (junk yard) you might find a 96 Monte like yours with a factory plug you could hack off and re- wire to your car. I will include a diagram showing that the speed sensor input is part of the radio circuit as well as a link to Crutchfield. I'm trying to give you options so you can pick the one that works best for you. Find what fits your car Crutchfield
there may be separate relay for these stuffs which you mentioned as not working.check this relay if burnt out replace it and check.
2. check the fuses.weather all in good condition.if not replace and check it.
3.check the wires going to these gadjets.weather damaged.
I had a similar problem. The speedometer didn't work. This is going to sound a little strange, but, at some point the battery died. When the new battery was put in, all of a sudden the speedometer worked again. Can't explain it, but it's true. Maybe just disconnecting and re-connecting the battery would help you, BUT BE CAREFUL about the radio. When the battery is disconnected (or dies) you have to put the radio code in again to use your radio. Make sure you have the 4-digit radio code before you disconnect the battery. If you enter it 3 times and fail, google what to do then.
It's probably not a fuse. It sounds like your vehicle speed sensor went bad in the transmission. The reason your radio stopped working was because your radio is probably equipped with speed sensitive volume and it requires a speed signal to work.
