Keeping the overdrive on during normal driving is ok. It's like making a 3 speed transmission a 4 speed. With it being an automatic, overdrive will only engage when the car speed and engine rpms meet the conditions for it to engage. NOT driving with overdrive at high speed will make the engine work much harder, and could likely cause that pulsing and surging as you have described. It's like down shifting in a manual transmission car. Keep overdrive on, it will only when when it is supposed to, automatically.

sorry cant answer this one ,no automatics here in spain ,but i would have a look at the solonoid thats on the gearbox thats operating the overdrive .Or trade it in for a nice VW or peugeot combi with 1.9 lt diesel and mega miles to the gallon ,a 5lt petrol gas guzler is not politicaly correct with our troops being blown up by rag heads now is it.

O/D Off light is on

Try hiting the overdrive button on the shift lever or the steering control lever you may have touched it without realizing it and it's not hard to test just push the button.

Overdrive indication light

first of all, does it shift into overdrive, I would check and see first of all if you drive it and it does go to O.D. then press the button once, does it not go to O.D. you can do this while driving, when running about 45 press the button once, do you feel it downshift. if yes then your light is burnt out...if no run an OBDII check to see if there are nay codes for the transmission. if that checks out theN i would go for the switch being bad..

OK, here is an update - The torque booster pump broke, so I had transmission rebuilt at Benchmark. So far a year and 20K miles later we have no problems.
