I recently had the same problem...car would not start. I was getting a spark on some of the wires, but not all. Replacing the Optispark Distributer gave me intermittent starts...worked fine for the garage every time. Have had the car towed back 3 times because of this. Problem turns out to also be a bad fuel pump. Fuel pump was only intermittently sending enough fuel to start and keep engine running.

Good news, though, is that the airconditioning system is still leak free for the last 14 years. So I got that going for me.

First thing I'd check is the optispark sub harness. Check both connections, the one by the optispark and the one on the passenger side of the intake manifold. Disconnect both sides and check for corrosion. This is a known weak spot on these motors.

If that checks out your going to want to start with the basics. Do you have spark and fuel? Pull the spark plug wire for a cylinder and using a spark tester test for spark while cranking. You want to have a nice blue spark. If you have good spark check for fuel pressure by hooking up a fuel pressure gauge to the shrader valve on the fuel rail. It should be in the high 40s - low 50s. If you have fuel also, check to make sure the injectors are getting a pulse using a noid light.

If you do have spark and fuel pressure then disconnect the coil and lift the injectors out still connected to the rail and turn over the engine to see if they are are clogged or have a nice spray. make sure to disconnect the connector to the coil or you could start a fire.

This sounds like you may have fuel at the rails, but do you know if the injectors are opening? You can assumed that the cam position sensors are working to fire the plugs and should work the injectors. There is a light test unit which may be borrowed to insert in the injector harness to determine if each connector is firing.

The throttle position sensor may be bad. You can check the connector end of this part with an ohmmeter to see if you have resistence when the throttle is moved.

Thats all I have for now.

I HAVE A 95 CHEVY SS IMPALA LT1...SOME DAYS IT START AND SOME DAYS IT WON'T...MY WATER PUMP IS LEAKING...DO U THINK WATER IS GETTING TO THE DISTRIBUTOR SHORTENING IT. WHEN IT DO START AFTER IT WARMS...

this sounds like it could be the water pump causing the problem as it is a common problem with this set up.when the water pump is being changed have the distributor cap, rotor, and wires replaced and have the distributor itself checked for damage caused by the pump leak.
