Cannot locate flywheel access to remove crank bolt

Cannot find the flywheel access plate to remove the crank bolt in order to change the water pump.

If you are working on a Mazda Protege, I can help you. I had the very same problem and finally found that there is no "plate" to remove.  There is an open "slot" that you can see from under the driver side of the car, looking to the passenger side very near the center beam at the bottom of the transmission, where it connects to the engine.  Once you find it and shine a flashlight at it, you will see the flywheel.
I had _no_ luck using a screw driver to jam the flywheel gear, I DID have luck using a 1 inch wood chisel, but it is a hassle.

How do i fix my mitsubishi fto water pump


Remove the bolt for the crank pulley. Use a gear puller the remove the pulley. If you don't have an impact gun, you have to remove the starter . So you can hold the flywheel/crank shaft from moving as you remove the bolt.

Change the water pump


  • Tools Required
  • J 43651 Water Pump Holding Tool
  • Remove the thermostat housing.
  • Remove the water pump access plate from the front cover.
  • Remove the right hand fender liner.
    1. Important: A drain plug has been provided at the bottom of the water pump assembly for additional coolant drainage from the engine block and water pump.
    Drain the coolant from the water pump using the plug at the bottom of the pump.
    1. mportant: The water pump holding tool supports the sprocket and chain during water pump service. The tool must be used or the balance shaft must be re-timed.
    Install the J 43651 into position.
    1. Tighten the bolts on the water pump holding tool into the threads on the water pump sprocket.
    2. Install the access cover bolts that were removed earlier to secure the water pump holding tool to the front cover assembly.
    3. Remove the 3 inner water pump sprocket to water pump blots.
      1. Important: Be sure to remove both water pump bolts from the front of the engine block.
      Remove the 2 water pump bolts.
      Remove the rear 2 water pump bolts.
      1. Remove the water pump.
      2. Remove and discard the water pump O-ring seal.
      Installation Procedure
      1. Important: Prior to installing the water pump, read the entire procedure. This will help avoid balance shaft chain re-timing and ensure proper sealing.
      Install a NEW water pump O-ring seal.

      1. Important: A guide pin can be created to aid in water pump alignment. Use a M 6 m x 6 mm stud. Thread the pin into the water pump sprocket.
      Using the guide pin, align the pin with the water pump holding tool.
      1. Position the water pump against the engine block and hand tighten the water pump bolts.
      2. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice.
      Install the inner water pump sprocket bolts. After 2 are snug, remove the guide pin and install the 3rd bolt.
      Tighten the bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
      1. Tighten the water pump sprocket bolts last. Tighten the bolts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
      2. Remove the J 43651.
      3. Install the water pump access plate and bolts. Tighten the bolts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
      4. Install the right hand fender liner.
      5. Install the thermostat housing.

Driver side timing belt (No. 2) and No. 2 tensioner-1.8L engine

Passenger side timing belt (No. 1) and No. 1 tensioner


  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Loosen the water pump pulley mounting bolts.
  3. Loosen the alternator mounting bolts and remove the alternator belt.
  4. Remove the water pump pulley bolts and remove the water pump pulley.
  5. Disconnect the electrical harness from the oil pressure switch.
  6. Remove the dipstick tube.
  7. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  8. Remove the timing belt cover plate, if equipped.
  9. Remove the timing belt cover bolts on the left, right, and center covers.
  10. Remove the timing belt covers.
  11. Remove the rubber cover seal. Clean all mating surfaces.

To install:

  1. Install a new timing belt cover seal.
  2. Install the timing belt covers on the engine using the mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to 48 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
  3. Install the timing belt cover plate, if removed.
  4. Install the crankshaft pulley, and tighten the bolt to 69-76 ft. lbs. (93-103 Nm)
  5. Install the dipstick tube.
  6. Connect the electrical harness to the oil pressure switch.
  7. Install the water pump pulley and loosely install the mounting bolts.
  8. Install the drive belt and adjust the tension as necessary. Tighten the alternator mounting bolts.
  9. Tighten the water pump pulley mounting bolts.
  10. Connect the negative battery cable.

Im replacing timing belt on 92 camry 30 v6 w/auto trans. i cannot breakloose he crankshaft balancer/pulley bolt. Are the threads lefthanded?is there any easy way to loosen this bolt without the crankshaft...


the fly wheel access is right there at the starter. it is a little piece of metal.remove it to gain access to the fly wheel or get someone to hold the crank pulley.you will also need a wheel pulley to remove the crank pulley

Trying to loosen the crank shaft polly to change water pump


Hi,
You need to remove the bellhousing cover plate and put a screw driver into the flywheel ring gear to lock it from turning.

If you can get a friend to help you do it because the bolt holding the pulley on is very tight.

How do i replace a water pump on a 1994 mazda protege


1.u need to jack the car up so u can take the passenger tire off. align the crank timing mark to top dead center with the front timing belt cover. 2. u need to loosen the crank bolt with am impact wrench, or secure the flywheel and lossen the crank bolt .3. u need a 10mm short 1/4 inch socket/or wrench inch to loosen the (4) water pump nuts. 4. i now recommend u loosen the alternator, u do not need to remove it. 5. if u have air-conditioning..i suggest u leave it on. remove the belt 6. powersteering can be loosened as well, 7. once u remove the crank pulley..u can take the 10 mm blots out of the timing belt/water pump covers.u will also need to support the engine(under the oli pan is ok) and remove the upper passenger side motor mount. 8. u will now see the timing belt. u need to remove it by loosening the tension pulley (14 mmm bolt) .u should make sure the crank is tdc. but u just need to make sure that when u re-install the new timing belt(whichu better do when u do a water pump)...,make sure the exhaust and intake cam shaft pulleys are aligned.(exhaust pulley is front side of car, intake is rear.)(e-for exhaust,i -for intake....they're aligned at center of each other (center of engine)now i must take a pee,brb in a minute. remove timing belt now 9. remove (5) 12 mm bolts from water pump. clean surface. 10. re-install in complete reverse order.i do recommend u use a black rtv gasket sealer on ur water pump gasket.(screw manufacturers statements on this use). tart with taking your two belts off, remove motor mount, remove power steering pump, crank pulley,next remove timing belt covers along with tensioners. Remove valve cover. timing belt tensioner, now you have access to the water pump. remember your timing marks before you remove. When installing timing belt hold camshaffts with vise grips to align. installation opposite of removal.

Removal & Installation

2.2L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Drain the engine coolant.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
    Exhaust manifold, if equipped with n automatic transaxle Right front wheel Splash shield Water pump sprocket access plate from the timing cover

  5. Attach Water Pump Sprocket Holding Tool J 43651to the sprocket using the access plate bolts to secure the tool to the engine front cover.
    Sprocket to water pump bolts Engine block to water pump bolt Engine front cover to water pump bolt Thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe 2 water pump to engine block bolts Water pump

To install:
  1. Use a threaded stud in the water pump hub to align the hub to the water pump sprocket.
    Water pump and bolts Thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe Engine front cover bolt and engine block to water pump bolt. Tighten the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) 2 of the water pump sprocket to water pump bolts
  2. Remove the threaded stud.
    Last water pump sprocket to water pump bolt and tighten the sprocket bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  3. Remove the tool.
    Water pump sprocket access plate to the timing cover and tighten the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm) Splash shield Right front wheel Exhaust manifold, if removed
  4. Fill the cooling system.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
2.4L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
    WARNING Do not rotate the flex coupling more than 4 degrees or damage may occur. Oxygen Sensor (O 2 S) electrical connector Exhaust manifold heat shield Coolant inlet housing bolt through the exhaust manifold Exhaust manifold brace-to-manifold bolt Manifold-to-exhaust pipe studs Coolant inlet housing-to-water pump cover bolt Exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold by pulling it downward Coolant inlet pipe from the oil pan Brake vacuum pipe from the camshaft housing Exhaust manifold from the cylinder head Heater hose from the heater outlet pipe Timing chain cover and tensioner Water pump cover-to-engine bolts 3 water pump-to-timing chain housing nuts Water pump and cover assembly Water pump cover from the pump

Hello Friend, I have a Dodge Caravan 1997 and in the process of changing out my water pump and timing belt. I am in the stage where I need to open the damper harmonic bolt. Which direction does this bolt...


I have managed to open the harmonic damper bolt. This bolt opens in the counter clockwise rotation. A breaker bar was used with the flywheel locked in place. In order to get to the flywheel, the starter motor was removed to get access. The manual suggest removing the bell housing plate. This takes more effort and one of side engine mount also need removal. I decided to remove the starter motor instead. In order to remove the starter motor, first remove the cables from the starter motor and three mounting bolts. Secure a rod or a screw driver between the flywheel and bell housing through a hole in the flywheel. The size of the size is about 1/2". This hole was visible when the engine is set to TDC (top dead center). There could be more than one hole but I did not try to rotate the engine to find out. Once the rod or the screw driver in place in the flywheel, use the 22mm socket head and breaker bar and undo the harmonic damper bolt counter clockwise (CCW). I believe an impact air gun could do this job as well. The spec on the bolt is 100 ft lbs torque - Hendry
