Sounds like your clutch is not releasing enough to allow you to engage or disengage. It is dragging which causes hard engagement and disengagement. Possible causes are, Low fluid in the master cylinder to the clutch, or bad slave cylinder down by the bell housing, or badly worn pressure plate, or air in the line leading to the slave cylinder. You will need to eliminate these items one by one by testing to find the bad item in the system. Good luck

I have a 1988 ford ranger 2.3l 5speed or 4speed w/over drive. Since i got the truck i have not been able to get it in 5th gear wont even budge. Why?

Susan, either linkage is damaged, out of adjustment, 5th gear is damaged and gone or you have a 5 speed shift knob on a 4 speed transmission.

My 93 ford ranger is stuck in 2nd gear, but the shifter just flops around. What could this be?

There is a roll pin on the shifter stick under the boot if its a manual and if its automatic its a broken shift cable. Which do you have?

1955 Ford Crwn Vic neutral switch will permit start in any gear not just neut or park. Is this a 2 or 3 speed auto transmission? will start in drive selection and only shift once witn no kickdown gear at...

A 1955 Ford would have a Ford-o-matic transmission which has three speeds forward. The transmission starts out in second gear unless you shift into low.
I am not aware of these transmissions having a neutral safety switch.
The 3 speed automatic transmissions that started in low and had a downshift to second under load were first used in the mid 1960s.

1989 ford ranger- "D" vs overdrive

Overdrive is designed for highway use, to lower the engine's rpm's and conserve fuel. It will not hurt your vehicle to drive it in drive in the city.

5 speed trans. hung in 4th gear

Can;t be sure on this one except to tell you that you may have a bent or broken shift fork in the tranny. The only way to find out is to remove the shifter from the top of the tranny and see if you can see the fork and move it in and out of gear. If not the next step is to remove the tranny and take it apart. With the information you gave that is about all I can help you with unless there is more info you can give to me.

1994 Ford Ranger won't shift into drive

In 9 out of 10 cases when I see this problem in the ranger, it is the planetary gear in the transmission. It is made of the cheapest metal available. It breaks usually from going to park before the truck stops or switching from reverse to drive while still rolling. Just a Idea , But I hope it isn't that . Reverse will work fine for a while, and have no forward gears.
