Question about 2004 Mazda RX-8
My Brake Lights on my Rx8 don't work
2004 Rx8 kept blowing 15amp brake light fuse. Solution: wire going to rear lights was worn and frayed where it feeds through the left trunk lip on left side of trunk. This can be seen when you open the trunk lid. The wire routes by the trunk lid hinge. If the support connectors come loose, the wires are crunched by the hinge or lid. Re-splice, insulate, zip-tie, replace fuse and replace any blown bulbs.

First check the fuse... then remove a bulb and check for corrosion (green stuff) if found clean with a wire brush... if not use a test light to check for power.. if no power then remove the wires from terminals on brake light switch located above brake pedal and touch them together if lights work, it's the switch... Hope this helps...;-)

its caused by a switch in the steering column. I have the same problem in my 1995 Lumina. I get around it by just pulling back on the turn signal lever when I hit the brakes.
Other wise you have to replace the switch. there are solutions posted on the internet.
