Question about 1998 Jeep Cherokee

1998 Jeep Cherokee Larado starts sometimes and wont start others

Sometimes the jeep starts and other times it wont start unless you touch the wires at the computer. Then it starts just fine. Is it a computer problem or a wiring problem? Or something else?

Check for dirty / bent pins on connector. check wires at harness side of pins for any corrosion. Problem is likely not the computer, based upon what you've said.

Have you checked the wires where they enter the back of the pins?

  • Richard Scordino Apr 14, 2009

Hold the harness with one hand and try carefully to move each individual wire with the other, till one particular wire shows up as the one with a problem. Use a pair of needle nose pliers if you can't get to any ceratin ones. If nothing do again at other end of harness. Sometimes a problem can be where someone had probed a wire with a test light and did not seal the hole. Look for this as well. Hey...I can't see what you are doing but I'm trying to make you do what I would be doing. If you move the harness and problem changes it must be something with the harness!!! Stay with it and you will find it!

I know you need to drive it more than you need a challenge, but being stubborn, I'd likely stay up all night going through every single individual wire till I found the problem. (not kidding, I completely tore apart a harness about two years ago, on the garage floor and did exactly that!) Turned out to be a pin that was not going into the bulkhead all the way, and was going in enough so when you unplugged it it would pull back and look normal. (shake harness & it would make contact) Well, it seems that you have done everything I can think of...Post back if you find it, I'll post if I suddenly have a better idea!!

2000 jeep Cherokee sometimes runs fine shut it off wont start but turns over fine later it will start

Ok. You didn't say what size engine was in the Jeep, but based on your problem, I'd bet its the 2.5L 4 cylinder. They had a classic issue with intermittent failure of the crankshaft sensor. This will cause the vehicle to just shut down without any other indications, Sometimes it will restart immediately, sometimes it can take minutes to hours to restart. The sensor is easy to replace and not very expensive. It is located on the drivers side of the transmission bell housing.

it's in your auto start system. mine does the same thing. after it sets fot 5 mins. it starts. if it is a factory installed auto-start, have dealer check. if it was installed by someone else, theirs a problem with installation or wired wrong.

98 jeep cherokee does not start straight away. No pattern just whenever it feels like it, nothing happens when the key gets turned. but other times it starts with no problem

Sounds like the fuel pump. Sometimes it'll start right up, others it'll crank for 30 seconds. Probably losing pressure. It's located in the fuel tank.

I've got to be reading this incorrectly...You are driving, the engine turns off...you pull off the road? And then without touching the key the engine re-starts, but you haven't touched the key? Or, sometimes you need to sit there for a few minutes and then turn the key to start it?

Car will not start

If this is a six cylinder, there were problems with the fuel pressure regulator leaking gas into the vacuum line creating a flooded condition. You might want to check map sensor, crank sensor.
