Mechanical problem On later model electronically controlled transmissions, can internal mechanical problems such as slipping clutches or brakes turn on the MIL light?

    yah, I am a technician in training so i don't have an actual car that has this problem, but am trying to find a reference to answer a technical question. Thanks for your input. Maverick

Yes it can. There are a couple sensors on the transaxle that monitors the revolutions of the drum and output shaft. Combined with vehicle and engine speed the ecu would detect a malfunction and set one or several codes.

code p 1870 refers to AT---component slipping===causes mechanical fault
this could be a band or clutch problem and could possibly be a matter of adjustment , fluid change or filter clean
I would take it to an accredited auto transmission specialist( only-no local mechanic ), have them do a proper diagnosis and quote and ask will a fluid change and adjustment when the pan is off fix the problem
if could be a band piston seal failure or low oil pressure from a failing pressure regulator
cannot suggest repair costs until you know exactly is wrong and that will be determined when the pan is off and the internals can be inspected

DTC P0894 Transmission Component Slipping
DTC P0894Circuit Description with 4L80-E / 4L85-E Automatic Transmission The powertrain control module monitors the engine speed and the transmission output shaft speed. The PCM calculates turbine shaft speed and torque converter clutch (TCC) slip speed by using inputs from the automatic transmission input shaft speed sensor, automatic transmission output shaft speed sensor, and other transmission components. The forward clutch housing is used as the AT ISS rotor. Whenever the TCC is engaged, engine speed and turbine speed will closely match, indicating low TCC slip speed. In D3, with the TCC engaged, calculated transmission component slip can only occur in the torque converter. In D4 OVERDRIVE, with the TCC engaged, transmission component slip can occur in the TCC or the fourth clutch assembly. If the PCM detects an excessive TCC slip speed in D4 OVERDRIVE, when the TCC should be engaged, then DTC P0894 sets. DTC P0894 is a type C DTC. For California emissions vehicles, DTC P0894 is a type B DTC.DTC Descriptor This diagnostic procedure supports the following DTC: DTC No MAF sensor DTC P0101, P0102 or P0103. No MAP sensor DTC P0106, P0107 or P0108. No TP sensor DTC P0120 or P0220. No VSS DTC P0502 or P0503. No ISS DTC P0716 or P0717. No TCC Stuck Off DTC P0741. No TCC Stuck On DTC P0742. The TCC slip speed is 100-550 for 15 sec For California emission equipped vehicles, the PCM illuminates the malfunction indicator lamp during the second consecutive trip in which the Conditions for Setting the DTC are met. For Federal emission equipped vehicles, the MIL is not illuminated. The PCM commands maximum line pressure. The PCM inhibits the TCC engagement. The PCM freezes transmission adaptive functions. The PCM records the operating conditions when the Conditions for Setting the DTC are met. The PCM stores this information as Freeze Frame, California only, and Failure Records, California and Federal. The PCM stores the DTC P0894 in PCM history during the second consecutive trip, California, or the first trip, Federal, in which the Conditions for Setting the DTC are met. For California emissions, the PCM turns OFF the MIL during the third consecutive trip in which the diagnostic test runs and passes. A scan tool can clear the MIL/DTC. For California emissions, the PCM clears the DTC from PCM history if the vehicle completes 40 warm-up cycles without an emission related diagnostic fault occurring. For Federal emissions, the PCM clears the DTC from PCM history if the vehicle completes 40 warm-up cycles without a non-emission related diagnostic fault occurring. The PCM cancels the DTC default actions when the fault no longer exists and the ignition switch is OFF long enough in order to power down the PCM. A TFP manual valve position switch malfunction can set DTC P0894. A mechanical failure of the shift solenoids or TCC PWM solenoid valve can set DTC P0894. Internal transmission failures can result in a DTC P0894. Sticking or contaminated shift valves may cause intermittent slipping in D4. DTC P0894 defaults to an elevated line pressure condition which may result in partial TCC apply. This may produce an idle surge that could stall the engine. The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table. 3. This step tests the indicated range signal to the actual selected range. A faulty TFP manual valve position switch can set a DTC P0894. 4. This step tests for excessive TCC slip speed while in a commanded TCC lock-up state and in fourth gear; and confirms that the fault is present. 5. This step tests for excessive TCC slip speed while in a commanded TCC lock-up state and in third gear. 6. This step tests for a sticking TCC shift valve. 7. Loss of power, transmission issues


code p0700 refers to transmission control system/MIL --malfunction===causes --wiring ---TCM (1)
code po740 refers to torque converter clutch (TCC) solenoid--circuit malfunction===causes--wiring--TCC solenoid--ECM/TCM (transmission control module) (again)
code p0871 refers to transmission fluid pressure (TFP) sensor C -range/ performance problem==causes---wiring--poor connection--TFP sensor--ECM /TCM (yet again)
code p0734 refers to gear 3 ratio (po374 is gear ratio 4) incorrect ratio===causes --wiring--TR sensor/switch--shift solenoids--transmission mechanical fault (causes are the same for po733&734)
code po846 refers to transmission fluid pressure (TFP) sensor B-range/ performance problem===causes ---wiring--poor connection--TFP sensor--ECM/TCM (again). Give the clutch a miss as you still have 1st gear and if the clutch is not working you will not be going any where. Have a pressure test done on the transmission to check for internal mechanical failures (pump ). The rest are sensors are wiring connections , sensor and TCM. My bet is the TCM unit. Have it checked out. What ever you do treat any suggestion of a new transmission with a grain of salt until you are shown proof positive that you need one.

Cluster warning lights

Whenever this warning light or any other stays on in the dash it is indicating that the systems control module (or the system sensor in the case of lights like low oil pressure, door open indicators etc.) has detected a fault, it then disables the system (this applies to ABS,TCS, TCM, SRS, TPMS, MIL, CEL and BCM faults and others) as long as the light is on. You must now have the dealer hook up a special electronic diagnostic tool and "scan" the system for the fault code that is stored for the problem(s)

P1744 - Torque Converter Clutch System Stuck in Off Position.

Either way the problem points to an internal transmission problem.
1. Drive it and see if the codes come back, and see if it is slipping in overdrive.

2. Check the transmission pressure in drive, with the overdrive on and the transmission slipping.

These transmissions have a high failure rate. Have seen internal transmission slippage that showed up in drive with the Overdrive (OD) switch on, but not with the OD switched off. It was related to the coasting clutch being on and off in that range. In that case, there was an internal mechanical transmission problem. We recommend a rebuilt transmission from the dealer and an external transmission cooler - the new rebuilt transmission will last longer.

I have a honda odyssey 2002, 138k miles, a few months ago the trans started slipping (going into neutral) between 2/3 and 3/4. I had the tran flushed. No problems for two weeks, then slip started again....


code p 700 refers to transmission control system/mil---malfunction===causes ---wiring --- TCM ( transmission control module)
code p 0730 refers to incorrect gear ratio====causes --TR sensor / switch--shift solenoids---transmission mechanical fault
code p 1740 refers to torque converter clutch solenoid
it is probably correct that dealers will not remove and repair transmissions but I suspect that they are not as reputable as they could be because the codes indicated are repairable in car
I am thinking that there is no mechanical problem requiring a $4,500 transmission so I suggest that you take it to an accredited professional transmission shop and get a proper diagnosis and a quote to replace the faulty tcm and TR sensors

When driving at 45-55mph the "d" on the dash that indicates the gearshift is in drive will suddenly dissapear. This is the indication that when I come to a stop light the transmission will now slip trying...


It's possible there is an electronic fault or a more serious internal mechanical condition causing the transmission to slip as it warms up. After parking for a bit the transmission cools down and often they will work better for a while until they warm up again. To start with I would have the transmission controller checked to see if there are any service codes and then have it test driven by a transmission specialist when the problem is occuring to get his opinion on it. It does sound a lot like a slipping clutch pack from what you describe however which would require the transmission to be removed to fix the problem. Good luck and hope this helps out a bit!

MODELS WITH FOUR-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS – ACTIVE ALL-WHEEL DRIVE: An electronically controlled variable transfer clutch and limited-slip rear differential distribute power to where traction is needed. Vehicle will not shift into overdrive after it gets hot it finally set code 741 tcc code whats that mean


"The PCM controls the torque converter clutch (TCC) solenoid valve pulse width modulation (PWM). The solenoid controls the hydraulic fluid for TCC apply and release. When the TCC is applied, the engine is coupled directly to the transmission through the TCC. The TCC slip speed should be near 0.

If the PCM detects high torque converter slip when the TCC is commanded ON, then DTC P0741 sets. DTC P0741 is a type B DTC.

Conditions for Running the DTC
• No TP DTCs P0121, P0122 or P0123.

• No VSS DTCs P0502 or P0503.

• No AT ISS DTCs P0716 or P0717.

• No TCC stuck ON DTC P0742.

• No IMS DTCs P1820, P1822, P1823 or P1825.

No TCC PWM solenoid valve DTC P1860.

• The engine run time is greater than 5 seconds.

• The time since the gear select lever change is greater than 6 seconds.

• The IMS indicates D2, D3 or D4.

• The transmission gear ratio indicates 2nd, 3rd or 4th gear.

• The transmission fluid temperature is 20-133°C (68-271°F).

• The TP angle is 10-50 percent.

• The engine torque is 43-215 N·m (32-159 lb ft).

• The TCC solenoid valve is commanded ON.

Conditions for Setting the DTC
TCC slip speed exceeds its limit for a given torque for 5 seconds.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets
• The PCM illuminates the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) during the second consecutive trip in which the Conditions for Setting the DTC are met.

• The PCM inhibits 4th gear if the transmission is in hot mode.

• The PCM records the operating conditions when the Conditions for Setting the DTC are met. The PCM stores this information as Freeze Frame and Failure Records.

• The PCM stores DTC P0741 in PCM history during the second consecutive trip in which the Conditions for Setting the DTC are met.

Conditions for Clearing the MIL/DTC
• The PCM turns OFF the MIL during the third consecutive trip in which the diagnostic test runs and passes.

• A scan tool can clear the MIL/DTC.

• The PCM clears the DTC from PCM history if the vehicle completes 40 warm-up cycles without an emission-related diagnostic fault occurring.

• The PCM cancels the DTC default actions when the ignition switch is OFF long enough in order to power down the PCM.

Gear problem


OK, slipping is an internal transmission problem. If the vehicle has not been on the road for a long time, I suggest that you at least change the trans fluid. Depending upon what year the vehicle was made, electronics play some part in trans operation (later years more so than earlier ones) but from what I understand from your post, it seems more likely that internal transmission clutches are not getting adequate apply pressure, and are therefore slipping. Using lower transfer case gears puts less load on the transmission therefore making it easier to get the vehicle moving, but the slipping is likely still there.If when you remove the trans pan you find a large amount of debris in there (either metal or clutch material), or any gummy residue this will verify that the problem is inside the unit. On some transmissions you can change pressure, but in most cases this does little or nothing to help the problem.
