Mechanical problem On later model electronically controlled transmissions, can internal mechanical problems such as slipping clutches or brakes turn on the MIL light?

    yah, I am a technician in training so i don't have an actual car that has this problem, but am trying to find a reference to answer a technical question. Thanks for your input. Maverick

Yes it can. There are a couple sensors on the transaxle that monitors the revolutions of the drum and output shaft. Combined with vehicle and engine speed the ecu would detect a malfunction and set one or several codes.

The transfer case (7A195) is equipped with a magnetic clutch, similar to an air conditioning compressor clutch, which is located inside the transfer case adjacent to the lockup sleeve. The clutch is used to spin up the front drive system from zero to vehicle speed in milliseconds. This spin-up allows the shift between 2H and 4H to be made at vehicle speeds listed in the vehicle owner's guide. The spin-up engages the front lock hubs. When the transfer case rear and front output shaft reach synchronous speed, the spring-loaded shift collar mechanically engages the mainshaft lockup hub to the chain-drive sprocket and the magnetic clutch is then deactivated. Shifts between 4H and 4L can only occur with the transmission safety switches closed. The vehicle's speed must also be within specified limits as determined by the Generic Electronic Module (GEM).
The electronic shift control system consists of a rotary switch control system, a GEM, a transfer case shift motor (7G360) with an integral shift position sensor, a clutch pedal position switch or digital transmission range (DTR) sensor, and a brake signal input switch.
There is a control switch located on the instrument panel for fingertip shift control.

Switch Control System
When the switch on the instrument panel is turned, there is a one second delay, then the electronic control module verifies the transfer case positions (2H, 4H or 4L). Next, the GEM looks at the shift position sensor and the digital transmission range (DTR) sensor or clutch pedal position switch (depending on transmission type) and brake pedal switch. If all conditions are correct to allow the desired shift, the electronic control module will tell the transfer case shift motor to execute the shift. After the shift has been made and the transfer case shift motor is off, the control module again looks at the shift position sensor to make sure the proper shift has been accomplished. Finally, the dash indicator light on the control panel will be illuminated by a signal from the GEM indicating the desired shift has been completed.
GEM
The generic electronic module controls the operation of the transfer case in response to inputs to the rotary control by the vehicle operator, the shift position sensor, the transmission range sensor and the brake pedal switch.

Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)
The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) (9E731) generates an AC signal which is sent to the instrument cluster (10849). The signal is used as input to the powertrain control module (PCM) and the transmission control module (TCM).
Shift Position Sensor
The shift position sensor, an integral part of the electric shift motor, tells the GEM module the shift position of the transfer case.
Electric Shift Motor
The electric shift motor, mounted externally at the rear of the transfer case, drives a rotary helical cam which moves the 2W-4W shift fork and 4H-4L reduction shift fork to the selected vehicle drive position.

What is the code p1870 on my 2000 isuzu rodeo and approximately how much for repairs


code p 1870 refers to AT---component slipping===causes mechanical fault
this could be a band or clutch problem and could possibly be a matter of adjustment , fluid change or filter clean
I would take it to an accredited auto transmission specialist( only-no local mechanic ), have them do a proper diagnosis and quote and ask will a fluid change and adjustment when the pan is off fix the problem
if could be a band piston seal failure or low oil pressure from a failing pressure regulator
cannot suggest repair costs until you know exactly is wrong and that will be determined when the pan is off and the internals can be inspected

DTC P0894Circuit Description with 4L80-E / 4L85-E Automatic Transmission The powertrain control module monitors the engine speed and the transmission output shaft speed. The PCM calculates turbine shaft speed and torque converter clutch (TCC) slip speed by using inputs from the automatic transmission input shaft speed sensor, automatic transmission output shaft speed sensor, and other transmission components. The forward clutch housing is used as the AT ISS rotor. Whenever the TCC is engaged, engine speed and turbine speed will closely match, indicating low TCC slip speed. In D3, with the TCC engaged, calculated transmission component slip can only occur in the torque converter. In D4 OVERDRIVE, with the TCC engaged, transmission component slip can occur in the TCC or the fourth clutch assembly. If the PCM detects an excessive TCC slip speed in D4 OVERDRIVE, when the TCC should be engaged, then DTC P0894 sets. DTC P0894 is a type C DTC. For California emissions vehicles, DTC P0894 is a type B DTC.DTC Descriptor This diagnostic procedure supports the following DTC: DTC No MAF sensor DTC P0101, P0102 or P0103. The PCM stores the DTC P0894 in PCM history during the second consecutive trip, California, or the first trip, Federal, in which the Conditions for Setting the DTC are met. For California emissions, the PCM turns OFF the MIL during the third consecutive trip in which the diagnostic test runs and passes. A scan tool can clear the MIL/DTC. For California emissions, the PCM clears the DTC from PCM history if the vehicle completes 40 warm-up cycles without an emission related diagnostic fault occurring. For Federal emissions, the PCM clears the DTC from PCM history if the vehicle completes 40 warm-up cycles without a non-emission related diagnostic fault occurring. The PCM cancels the DTC default actions when the fault no longer exists and the ignition switch is OFF long enough in order to power down the PCM. A TFP manual valve position switch malfunction can set DTC P0894. A mechanical failure of the shift solenoids or TCC PWM solenoid valve can set DTC P0894. Internal transmission failures can result in a DTC P0894. Sticking or contaminated shift valves may cause intermittent slipping in D4. code p0700 refers to transmission control system/MIL --malfunction===causes --wiring ---TCM (1)
code po740 refers to torque converter clutch (TCC) solenoid--circuit malfunction===causes--wiring--TCC solenoid--ECM/TCM (transmission control module) (again)
code p0871 refers to transmission fluid pressure (TFP) sensor C -range/ performance problem==causes---wiring--poor connection--TFP sensor--ECM /TCM (yet again)
code p0734 refers to gear 3 ratio (po374 is gear ratio 4) incorrect ratio===causes --wiring--TR sensor/switch--shift solenoids--transmission mechanical fault (causes are the same for po733&734)
code po846 refers to transmission fluid pressure (TFP) sensor B-range/ performance problem===causes ---wiring--poor connection--TFP sensor--ECM/TCM (again). Give the clutch a miss as you still have 1st gear and if the clutch is not working you will not be going any where. Have a pressure test done on the transmission to check for internal mechanical failures (pump ). The rest are sensors are wiring connections , sensor and TCM. My bet is the TCM unit. Have it checked out. What ever you do treat any suggestion of a new transmission with a grain of salt until you are shown proof positive that you need one.

Cluster warning lights

Whenever this warning light or any other stays on in the dash it is indicating that the systems control module (or the system sensor in the case of lights like low oil pressure, door open indicators etc.) has detected a fault, it then disables the system (this applies to ABS,TCS, TCM, SRS, TPMS, MIL, CEL and BCM faults and others) as long as the light is on. You must now have the dealer hook up a special electronic diagnostic tool and "scan" the system for the fault code that is stored for the problem(s)

I have a honda odyssey 2002, 138k miles, a few months ago the trans started slipping (going into neutral) between 2/3 and 3/4. I had the tran flushed. No problems for two weeks, then slip started again....


code p 700 refers to transmission control system/mil---malfunction===causes ---wiring --- TCM ( transmission control module)
code p 0730 refers to incorrect gear ratio====causes --TR sensor / switch--shift solenoids---transmission mechanical fault
code p 1740 refers to torque converter clutch solenoid
it is probably correct that dealers will not remove and repair transmissions but I suspect that they are not as reputable as they could be because the codes indicated are repairable in car
I am thinking that there is no mechanical problem requiring a $4,500 transmission so I suggest that you take it to an accredited professional transmission shop and get a proper diagnosis and a quote to replace the faulty tcm and TR sensors

When driving at 45-55mph the "d" on the dash that indicates the gearshift is in drive will suddenly dissapear. This is the indication that when I come to a stop light the transmission will now slip trying...


It's possible there is an electronic fault or a more serious internal mechanical condition causing the transmission to slip as it warms up. After parking for a bit the transmission cools down and often they will work better for a while until they warm up again. To start with I would have the transmission controller checked to see if there are any service codes and then have it test driven by a transmission specialist when the problem is occuring to get his opinion on it. It does sound a lot like a slipping clutch pack from what you describe however which would require the transmission to be removed to fix the problem. Good luck and hope this helps out a bit!

Gear problem


OK, slipping is an internal transmission problem. If the vehicle has not been on the road for a long time, I suggest that you at least change the trans fluid. Depending upon what year the vehicle was made, electronics play some part in trans operation (later years more so than earlier ones) but from what I understand from your post, it seems more likely that internal transmission clutches are not getting adequate apply pressure, and are therefore slipping. Using lower transfer case gears puts less load on the transmission therefore making it easier to get the vehicle moving, but the slipping is likely still there.If when you remove the trans pan you find a large amount of debris in there (either metal or clutch material), or any gummy residue this will verify that the problem is inside the unit. On some transmissions you can change pressure, but in most cases this does little or nothing to help the problem.
