Question about 1999 Mazda 626

1 Answer

1999 Mazda 626 goes in reverse but not forward.

Started acting weird. Engine light came on then started blinking. Checked the transmission fluid a day before but was low after this happened. An ideas? Transmission blown?

When you say everything goes dead are we talking all lights, radio, wipers? If so, main power or ground cables bad or fusible link. If just engine, check coil, ignition module, crank/cam position sensor.

Loss of reverse is a dead givaway that the transmission has failed. The reverse clutch band has failed.

Hello littlemegmb, I am so sorry your having issues with your transmission.
My best guess with the info you posted.
1. I have to ask, because you didn't mention it. Are you sure you used the right fluid?
I am pretty sure that the 95 Mazda is supposed to have Dextron II, or higher. using the wrong fluid can cause some of the issues you are having, and can do perminent damage. If you are not positive that you used the right fluid, please call any parts store and give them the info on your car so they can look up the right fluid. Also, ask them how many quarts you should need when you change the fluid, I think it's around 7 quarts
2. If you know for sure that you used the right fluid, myself, I would let the car run for about 5 minutes, then check your tranny dip stick to make sure that you put enough fluid back in to the tranny, it needs to be checked while it's hot.
99% of the time, when a transmission is slipping, or, it wont move, it's low on fluid.
You do need to be mindful that it is very easy to overfill the transmission, which can lead to other serious issues.
3. One reason that the transmission seems to work better when it's cold, is, all the fluid has had a chance to drain down into the pan, but, once the car is started the fluid again begans to circulate leaving the level in the pan way to low.
I really, really hope that you find it's something simple like the fluid is way too low.
That is my best guess.
Good luck!

I believe your transmission may be shot, Check your dipstick level to make sure your fluid level is full. If it is than your transmission may need a overhaul.

O/d light just started blinking but trans has been slipping for about 3 wks. idea on how much to fix?

I had the same problem. Transmission fluid pump wears out and caused low pressure for the transmission fluid circulation resulting in a major transmission failure. The repair is overhauling the transmission. A Mazda dealer will charge about $4,000.00 overhauling the transmission but you should be able to have a transmission place do the job for about half the money.

95 mazda 626 automatic transmition....will not reverse

Check you transmission fluid level and if it's not your transmission, I'm thinking that your brake shoe lineing in the rear brakes may have separated and is jamming up aginst the drums when your trying to back up. Sorry can't halp you with any more, good luck and start with that and hope it help's.

Mazda 626 auto tranny engages slow switching from reverse

Sounds like a pump issue, check line pressure. If it does have a bad trans pump it can be changed with out removing the trans. But also check the fluid level if you haven't already.

Sounds to me like a fuel related problem. When heavy accelerating more fuel is pushed through the system. I would check the fuel filter, and its possible its the fuel pump, but usually once the pump starts acting up, within a few days it will go out all together.
