Air pump relay missing in 96 firebird

Just bought this car dirt cheap to fix up and the check engine light is on, auto parts store checked the code and it said maf or vaf a low circuit input. I looked under the hood and the relay for the air pump is missing. could this be the problem?

That is one of you problems, but I will need the codes to help further.
The burning question is why is the relay missing. Apparently there was a previous problem with the system and it was removed to disable the component.
So, get a relay and reply back with the code numbers and we can get started.

Do you have a 5.7 ltr engine or the 3.8.

In either case the code is indicating a low frequency issue.

It can be caused by a disconnected sensor or poor connection at the sensor.

Also a dirty or contaminated element in the MAF can cause the code.

Make sure there is a stock or OEM filter in the air cleaner housing.

If someone has add K&N filters with washable, oil soaked socks. The oil used will contaminate the MAF element and cause the code. I would suggest "gently" cleaning the MAF element with an electrical contact cleaner spray and replace the air filter element. That may solve this particular problem for you.

Make sure all breather hoses and ducts are secure, connected and tight. No cracks in the ducting or breather lines.

Next, get a relay for the air pump issue and we will start looking at that.

    Good luck.

    Regards,

Bring your car to an auto parts store. The will plug a box in to see what error codes are causing the check engine light. Look up the code and fix as needed, the auto parts store will help you out, usually for free.

Your computer on your firebird is logging a trouble code when the check engine light comes on. Save yourself some money and go to a local parts store to use a scanner. Most parts stores will hook up to your car for free and tell you the codes that are being logged. You can spend a lot of money assuming what parts may be malfunctioning by just throwing parts at your car. Check it first and you will be money ahead.

What does it mean when my 2003 honda pilots check engine light comes on?

Hi, the check engine light will require you to have the engine CPU scanned for trouble code's. This can only be administered with the assistance of a diagnostic computer scan tool OBD II. You can purchase this tool, at your local auto parts store, or you can just have the scan ran at your local auto zone parts store, free of charge. Once the diagnostic scan is administered, you will be able to isolate the issues that have caused the check engine light.
This scan tool will display a print out code and the location of the issue, on the engine, as well. There are Many issues that will cause the engine light to illuminate, but the most common cause will be a failed monitoring sensor, or sensor harness failure(separated power wire, or ground).
After retrieving the code, it will be interpreted to know what caused the lights to come up and that will be used to fix the problem.

I have bought 4 fuel pumps(not including orginal) for my 2001 Mits. Mirage. after the fourth one, we put the third one on a battery and it worked because mechanic said they should not be buring out that...

Check the contacts in the connector to the fuel pump for dirt or corrosion. There probably is a fuel pump relay in the circuit, but if it were the problem, changing the fuel pump would not provide a (temporary) fix. Another possibility is a broken wire in the fuel pump harness. If that is the case, wiggling the harness while the engine is running will cause the engine to stumble or kill. Focus on the fuel pump end first, especially the connector, since changing the pump seems to help for a while.

Another possibility is debris in the fuel tank clogging the pump intake. The stuff falls off as soon as you pull the pump. Clean the tank, then check the venting and cap for any situation that lets contaminants enter the tank. Don't forget the charcoal canister; perhaps powdered charcoal is getting sucked in from there (if so, you'll find it in the hose connected to the canister), or a cracked hose or tube is letting dirt in.

The check engine light just started coming on.

have your alternator and battery check first, it is free at most big chain auto parts stores. Your check engine light system record problems in many sytems, it is also possible to have the auto parts store retrive the code, DO NOT ERRASE THE CODE UNTILL FIXED your mechanic will need them.

2003 Audi A4 1.8T Check Engine light on

The CEL means there is a Diagnostic Fault Code stored in the Engine Control Unit. There are 1000's of DTC's, so you will need to have it read by a Code Reader. Auto Parts stores like Auto Zone, Pep Boys, perhaps even Advanced Auto often will read the code for you; but by law they cannot clear the codes. Many codes do not cause drivability problems, severe ones will trigger the ECU to run in a Limp Mode, which would require repair work before any trip longer than a few miles. Hope this is helpful.

Fuel filter???

Check the throttle position sensor.
Then, possibly the air filter.
Finally.. try checking the plugs.
(it almost sounds like she's flooding out.)
