Question about 2006 Kia Optima

2 Answers

Just had spark plugs changed in my 2006 Kia Optima (4cyl) at the dealer. $148.20. Does that sound appropriate? It was expressed that to them that I simply wanted to keep my warranty intact (30,000 mile check-up). I just want to know if that is a reasonable price. [The transmission flush was only $105.] [When I purchased the car, they said it was from the first-half of the year and that Kia had changed that specific car mid-year. Not sure that makes any difference.]

The $148 was the parts and labor for changing the four spark plugs alone.

Spark plugs at Wal-Mart run from $4 to $10 here in Martinsville (OEM replacement plugs as low as $1.70 online). Of course, you're never "allowed" to use "those" spark plugs, I understand. These were $15.80 a piece, totalling $63.20 for the plugs alone. Labor was $85 at dealer.

Aside from the absurd cost for spark plugs, the offense is that they charge an hour of labor for a job that took him 10 minutes to complete.

So my question is whether someone "in the know" can confirm that this $148 price tag is steep for honest work to replace four spark plugs in the 2006 Optima (4cyl)?

i'm admittedly confused. did they charge you $148 to do the plugs... or plugs and transmission flush was $148 ?

I just checked a site which provides an estimator. Apparently those plugs are hard to get to. In my area, the estimate is $48 - $72 for parts (plugs), and $199 - $254 for labor, depending on whether you use a dealer or an independent shop. It would seem that the price you paid was reasonable (good even!).

Your owners manual should have the 30,000 check up and the checks and adjustments involved. These checks are usually kitted at a price and the service advisor should let you know what the charges are for in advance, so there are no misunderstandings later. Always inquire about the cost of preset services before signing the work order, once you sign in the authorization box you are on the hook for the cost of repair. Spark Plugs are relatively cheap, $10 to $20 for common plugs, maybe more for special fit.

How can i change my own spark plugs on my kia optima 2006

If it's a 4 cylinder then you have to remove the "coil pack" from the top of each spark plug. Should be a 10mm socket. then using a long reach spark plug socket, remove the spark plugs. Make sure to set the "gap" of the new ones before you install. Then re install the coil packs and secure them.

If it's a 6 Cylinder then remove the plug wires from the top of the plugs, then smae as above but you will probably use a spark lug socket and a short extension with the rachet, Once again be sure to "gap" the plugs before you install. best to do the plugs ONE AT A TIME, so that you don't mix up the wires.
