Question about 1996 Ford Probe

1 Answer

I need to know what kind of transmission fluid a 1996 ford probe takes. I just bought one and it looks like it has gear oil in the trani. Was wondering if that's what is suppose to be in it or if it takes straight ATF.

Where do I add Transmission fluid on a 95 ford Probe??

So you know, I am not insulting you. I don't know what you know or what you don't know. From your symptoms, I'm confused. If you pulled the trani pan down and the trani dip-stick still read "Full", you pulled the wrong dip-stick. Your transmission takes Mercon and you will need a narrow funnel that will fit inside the trani dip-stick tube. Follow the dip-stick tube all the way to the bottom and verify that it goes to the transmission. When you pulled the trani pan down you should have four or more quarts empty into your drain-pan. Until you can confirm that the the trani is properly filled, don't continue to use the car. Running the engine while the trani is empty can damage internal componants. If you have any questions, please write back, good luck.

Where do I put in the transmission fluid in a 96 Ford Taurus 3.0 6-cylinder?

Look for the red dip stick the yellow is always engine oil the red is the transmission don't mix them up . You can add transmission fluid down this tube. However if your haveing shifting problems look at the color of the existing oil and smell it . It shouldn't smell burnt and should be red in color if it is you may need to have the flushed and serviced to keep it from dieing on you . Its a lot cheaper them replaceing the trany

My transmission pan has metal shavings and it won't shift out of low gear. is it a sensor or do i need to rebuild my transmission. 1996 dodge stratus se 2.4 l

metal shavings is a good indicator the trany needs rebuilt,( those metal shavings are from drive gears inside of trany)but the only way to know 100% is to take it in. sorry that happened to you....i know that's not the answer you where looking for.

Grinding noise in transmission ford festiva 1996

If you are correct about the grinding noise and it is coming from the trani and not the wheel bearings or something else. Then I think you may have a serious problem. When was the last time the fluid was changed?
Was does the trani fluid look like and how is the level?
When do you hear the noise? How does it shift and drive?

How do i inject the transmission fluid in the transmission

there is a small filler neck in frt. of the trany , with red cap on it. Brake the cap , there will be a plug under.
Proccedure : engine on idle , take of plug at the bottom of trany oil pan(with engine on idle!!!!! , if engine off , fluid will leak out) , use transfering pump to pump oil in to filler neck untill it starts leaking from bottom plug , wiat till it only drips , put bottom plug back in and torque it. Now you can shut engine off and seal filler neck.
Use only approved trany fluid .This trany takes syntetic fluid.

DONT USE GEAR OIL IN A MANUAL TRANSMISSION. it will blow your seals out. the gear oil is too heavy and will block passages in the tranny

Wont shift into high gears

automatic im assuming??? how much trans fluid is in the trans, what does it look like??? red or brown, how many miles on veh??? need to know all of these but if lower gears work properly, most likely you have internal transmission failure which means rebuild or replacement.....sorry but true....if you reply though will give other things to check, but pretty sure its internal....

Ford ATF is different from Dexron. Ford fluid contains banana oil, Dexron doesn't. Use only what it calls for. Or, you will always wonder. Good Luck.

94' Ford Probe Automatic Transmission fluid check question

The car needs to be running with the transmission warm, (drive around for at least 10 minutes) Place the car in neutral. Pull the stick wipe it off and place it back in the transmission. Reads just like an oil stick, want fluid in the safe range (checked pattern) area.

95 ford probe se auto. trans. shifts back and forth from 3rd and 4th gear once on hwy. suspect o/d switch or speed/shifting sensors. any ideas?

I own a 1995 Ford Probe SE 2.0L that suffered the same problem. The transmission shop Techs insisted the transmission was blown and needed replaced. After doing some research it turn out to be the Park Neutral Switch also known as a Transmission Range Sensor right below the air box. The part cost 54 bucks. The problem stopped after replacing it. About a year latter the problem came back. After doing some more research it turn out to be the VSS speed sensor. The part cost 57 bucks. The problem stopped after replacing it.
