Question about 1996 Nissan Sentra

Oxygen sensor needs to be replaced

My local garage wants to charge me $167+ for a replacement oxygen sensor for my 1996 Nissan Sentra GXE. The prices I saw for this part online ranged from approx. $30-$70. Is there justification for them charging me so much? Thanks.

Thank you for your comments. The place that wanted to charge me $157 did not diagnose the problem, therefore there would have been no extra charge for time/labor. I appreciate the feedback, though. I think I will purchase it on line myself.

That was a cheap repair if the are the ones that diagnosed the problem, it takes time to decide what the problem is. time is money. Also they always mark up parts prices, it is standard practice, in a dealer it is 100%

No there is no reason these places charge so much that is why i do all of the repair on my car myself what i would do it get the part and change it myself may sure the car is cool and look for it on the exhaust for the most part its on the exhaust pipe coming down from the engine and it looks like a big sparkplug

2001 Nissan Sentra. Car starts with no power, but after a few restarts, gain power again. Code is PO420.

Hi, P0420 code means a catalytic converter fault.
The catalytic converter has an oxygen sensor in front and behind it. When the vehicle is warm and running in closed loop mode, the upstream oxygen sensor waveform reading should fluctuate. The downstream O2 sensor reading should be fairly steady. Typically the P0420 code triggers the Check Engine Light if the readings of the two sensors are similar. This is indicative of (among other things) a converter that is not working as efficiently as it should be (according to specs). It is part of the vehicle emissions system.
  • Check for exhaust leaks at the manifold, pipes, catalytic converter. Repair as required.
  • Use a scope to diagnose the oxygen sensor operation (Tip: The oxygen sensor in front of the catalytic converter normally has a fluctuating waveform. The waveform of the sensor behind the converter should be more steady).
  • Inspect the downstream heated oxygen sensor (HO2), replace if necessary
  • Replace the catalytic converter

Bad oxygen censor

You can buy a replacement sensor from your local auto parts store. Also, you can buy universal oxygen sensors on-line and wire them to the connector from your old sensor. It can be a little difficult removing the old sensor from the exhaust pipe, so be careful. Make sure you get a good bite on the wrench flats.

2002 nissan sentra gxe 1.8 bank2 sensor1 federal emission.Which sensor do I replace?Top/bottom,driver/pass side?

The 1.8 is a 4 cyl. engine . it has only 2 oxygen sensors . Nissan engine controll systems devides its EGO sensors into banks . Bank 1 is the upstream (top before the catylyctic converter) . Bank 2 is the downstream (after the cat. conv.) I recomend you change both for emissions reasons
