Question about 1990 Volvo 740

1 Answer

Several times after a long drive (100 miles) the car won?t start in park. Dash lights come on and key turns, but when the key is turned, the indicator lamps go out and it seems dead. Sometimes I can jump it (battery is fine), recently I found that if I short the starter/solenoid red wires, it kicks over and starts.

Sounds like a bad ignition switch, no the key clylinder but the actual electrical switch.

There should be a safety switch that registers the gear selector to be in park otherwise it will not start. I sounds like it is either wired wrong or is simply out of adjustment.

First make sure the battery is fully charged. Then check for clean battery post connections. Then check all the main fuses located in the plastic box under the hood close to the battery on top of the inner fender. You should have all dash lights if everything check out to this point and it should turn over with the key.

Service (Wrench) System Check The SERVICE (Wrench) telltale is turned ON by the cluster when it receives a command from the powertrain control module (PCM) or the body control module (BCM). The PCM or BCM will turn the SERVICE (Wrench) telltale ON for all non-emission related diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) that require that a telltale be turned ON, some DTCs do not turn ON a telltale but are stored to aid in diagnosis.
The SERVICE (Wrench) telltale will also be turned ON if the Antilock Brake System (ABS) control module has detected a fault in its own warning indicator system. If the ABS cannot turn ON its own telltale, a message will be sent to the BCM through the Key Word 2000 data bus to turn ON the SERVICE (Wrench) telltale.
The SERVICE (Wrench) telltale will be turned ON by the cluster for 2-3 seconds, when the ignition is turned to RUN, for a visual system check.

You need to have codes checked .

I have a 1994 Volvo 960 and the arrow is flashing on the dash plus the W,S,E buttons are blinking and the car won't start now. What is causing this and how can it be fixed?

The lights indicate a problem with the transmission. The fact that the engine wont start, leads me to believe that the PNP (neutral safety switch) is the problem. You will have to have the vehicle scanned to make sure.

Brand new...100 miles on it, but what happened?!

cant tell you whats wrong. obovously some kind of wiring issue. but DOCUMENT DOCUMENT DOCUMENT and take it to the dealer every time for warranty issues!!! If they cant fix it you can lemon it out after 3 failed attempts. i found a free lemon lawyer online and lemoned out a '04 blazer for a leak that started right after i bought it. i think problems have to start within the first 2000 miles so you are well within that restriction!!!!
