Question about 1998 Dodge Dakota

1 Answer

1998 Dodge Dakota 5.2l V8 Stalling.

My Dad and I are trying to Figure out whats wrong with the Truck. If you turn the key, it will start right up, but once you give it gas, it sputters, then dies. Then if you get it to drive for alittle, it will stall and not want to restart.. You must keep your foot pressed on the gas for it to start again..Many Articles online, made it seem like the TPS possibly or Oxygen Sensors.. If that is that case, is there an Online Guide that shows where they are all Located? Thank You

Some cars and trucks still require a vented gas cap. Sounds like a fuel issue to me, take a look at the fuel pressure, or if you have a vacuume lock condition. You may even have a clogged fuel filter. I remember my dad had a 92 dodge with a cummings in it, he was afraid of someone stealing his gas, so he removed the factory gas cap and installed a locking gas cap. He would start driving and about after 2 to 3 hours, it would sputter and die out. He had it towed to Dodge when he was on the road and by the time they got there, nothing was wrong. Back on the road again and a couple of hours later and it died again on him. He was sitting waiting for tow truck and he heard a dull thud from under the bed. The plastic gas tank basically expanded finally. He opened up the gas cap and sure enough the vacuume pressure was there at the cap. So he loosened up the cap and drove it that way until he got home. We then looked for a "Vented" locking cap, we had a hard time finding owe. Simple solution, we drilled a hole from the back side into the key area. Works like a champ.

I have a dodge Dakota 92 LE v8 this problem has gradually gotten worse. it will fire right up the periodically shut down; now it wont start at all, then after replacing coil, crank position, cam position,...

Maybe I can help. I had a Chrysler Lebarron V8 that quit on me randomly and it turned out to be the coil resistor on the firewall. I started carrying a spare since it happened so often.

Possibly... not enough backpressure due to the leak. Also, it may have an issue with the O2 sensors not getting the correct amount of exhaust to measure.

You may also want to look into the Idle Air Control (IAC) sticking or dirty.

A 2wd transmission on a 4wd truck?

It should drop right in with a new drive shaft for the 2wd. The frame should have extra holes drilled for the 2wd crossmember location.
