Transmission fluid When I first start up and drive my 1983 Toyota pickup cold it runs fine. After about 10 minutes of driving I start to loose power when stepping on the accelerator pedal. Truck continues to run and the engine winds up but it is like the transmission is in neutral and I can only creep along slowly. Could this mean the Fluid is low and when it warns up their is not enough there? There is no Transmission dip stick so I don't know how to check it. Thanks

When the transmission warm up the seals don't allow fluid to move correctly. You will probably need a transmission rebuild

You are going to need to have the transmission rebuilt.

SOURCE: My car had an accident

Dear Fix Ya,

Thank you so much, your advice worked. We couldn't find a transmission flush but the wrong fluid was completely drained and since we didn't have a flush, the bottom plate was dismantled and the filter and all other srrounding parts were cleaned and fixed back before injecting the right fluid ATF Type T-IV.

For the first time in 5 months I drove my car for 3 hours without the car stopping and refusing to accelerate. I'm so happy the problem is over.

SOURCE: how to change transmission fluid on a 91 Toyota 4

This is a really messy job, but here is what u must do, jack the truck off the ground and secure with safety stands, there is a sheet metal pan on the bottom of the transmission, remove it, fluid will go everywhere, do u have a large drain pan? measure the fluid drained out and put the same amount back in, the run the engine until the trans fluid is hot at least 180 deg Fahrenheit, recheck the trans fluid level and top off, donot overfill!! u can destroy the trans if u do.

SOURCE: 2004 Toyota 4 runner: I

If it was a red colored fluid it was transmission fluid. You need to check that on level ground with the motor running to be sure you get the level correct. Normally you have to pull all of the Pan bolts to drain this but every so often Toyota puts a drain plug on the transmission. Make sure you haven't over filled that.
The engine drain is at the rear of the motor on the bottom. On a side ways mounted engine that is the side toward the firewall and will be a black or brownish color.

No you are looking for expensive solutions which it may not need ---start engine and make sure handbrake is on hard then select reverse and check the fluid level with the engine running ,i think you will find its about just under a litre short of transmission fluid but you cannot check it properly unless its in reverse with engine running ,and for good measure put a brick behind the drive wheels .

Low transmission fluid is usually the only reason power engages late or slippage occurs. But changing the transmission fluid again would not hurt. The stuff really shouldn't deteriorate like engine oil. Be sure to not run the vehicle many miles until the problem is completely resolved < 100 miles. One easy check would be to make sure the transmission lines are well connected and maintain pressure as well as fluid level. The good thing is that Toyota has a reputation of very good transmissions.

A dark red or burgundy color fluid most likely means you have a transmission fluid leak.

Warm you car up for 5-10 minutes and check your transmission fluid level while it's running and you will likely find it to be low.

I know you said new fuel pump and filter but I would recheck the fuel pressure. Drive the vehicle with the fuel pressure gauge on it and see if the pressure drops after 10 minutes.
