Question about 1989 Cadillac Sedan DeVille

1 Answer

I have a 1989 caddy sedan deville. The smog pump seized up and froze. I need to remove this pump. How long of a job is this and can I gut the insides of the pump out and replace it as just an idler pulley? We dont have smog control or emissions where I live. Thanks for the help.

replace the pump, it is very easy and fairly cheap, don't pollute the air my children breath just because your area doesn't have smog checks, polluted air travels around the planet in a very short time, it is a global issue and we all need to do our Job. Cheers :)

Replace the pump as it does other things than just pump air into the exhaust. I helps in cold starting and keeps the engine from backfiring during deceleration. You can cause the converter to fail also. I have a service manual and it tells you to first loosen the pulley bolts on the pump first then remove the belt and pulley. Remove inlet hose and outlet hose then the mounting bolts .

Tackle this and learn something. Check a local library for a chilton manual on this car. Now, if we cap off the volcanoes, the air pollution will get better too.

No fuel pressure when cranking over. dump gas down carb and runs til fuel is gone. Its a 89 caddy deville with 4.5, has sat for two years. Is it the fuel pump or could it be the fuel relay? If relay, where...

More often than not it is the fuel pump, especially with sitting for a couple years, hopefully empty if not try and get out as much of the old gas as possible when you replace the pump.
