Jeep Cherokee 1989 brakes not working

I hope I'm not entering the same thing again but my ABS light is still on and brakes are still not working. We bled the brakes and it built back up pressure but still will not stop the vehicle. Slows it down but will not completely stop. Do we need a new ABS module or something more? Just can't figure out what the problem is. My son is trying to fix it in his auto tech class but I don't think the teacher is familiar with Jeep. He said it wasn't the master cyclinder or the brake boost

Thank you

My sons teacher said it was a hydraulic booster. Does this make any difference in checking the line?

Thank you very much for this info. It did help. Although Chrysler corp has now said the recall was already satisfied in 2001. We are trying to do a brake flush but we do not have to repair manual with the correct sequence. This is a odd year when AMC was changing over to Chrysler and we have parts from both. Do you have an idea where I could get the correct sequence for a brake flush?

Abs module shouldn't keep the vehicle from stopping but the light will come on if there is a leak in the system you could simply disconnect the module to find out though I would check the master cylinder and calipers/wheel cylinders though look for leaks on the floor board (under the brake pedal) around the wheel make sure when you bleed the brakes you only add new brake fluid dot 3 or 4 any water or contamination can cause failure+abs light a bad booster/and/or/vacuum line will cause excessive pressure on the pedal but should still stop the vehicle. if the vehicle was ever wrecked there could be kinked lines but not likely

there are also two other recalls on this vehicle you need to contact the dealer for repair
also as a said the brake booster will not cause failure only excessive pedal pressures
however contaminated brake fluid can cause total failure which coincides with the recall in this case
I suggest you call Jeep before replacing or removing any parts also If the booster is in fact also bad you will usually hear almost like a weezing sound when you apply pressure to the pedal with the engine off
Best wishes to you let me know how it turns out

take a look at this article it may be helpful http://www.popularmechanics.com/automoti...
as for the abs components they can be done by hand but it does require quite a bit of skill and care! Also remember when the lines are open fluid will slowly drain and you don't want the master cylinder to run out of fluid in the reservoir this will only complicate the process. Also be sure to use new brake fluid only
NOTICE: if your son is going to perform the work make sure he is using proper safety equipment ie: safety goggles and gloves Although not as likely on low pressure equipment, pressurized hydraulic fluid of any type can pose severe injection hazards(fluid sprayed into skin or eyes and injecting under the tissue)

the easy way would be to check the bulbs elements if 1 of them is burnt all u have to do is replace it.then check the brake switch which is under the steering column u cant miss it the brake peddle rests against it when not being pressed down, which is how it works too.also check all the fuses.if all else fails start checking wires.

Abs light comes on every so often!

if you insist on having an airbag that works, replace the sensor which is under the console next to the seatbelt buckle. on the 2006 it is a little black box. the console is easy to remove look it up on the internet.

ABS and loss of break pressure

Yes you can disable ABS. First, You said you loose brake pressure. Does your brake system have a vacuum booster and a master cylinder or is the master cylinder abs hydraulic assembly all built together?

Jeep Cherokee ABS light is on and now no brakes

Hi laustiin,
When the ABS system fails the brakes revert to standard brakes. The ABS module will not repair this for you.
The master cylinder is not likely to change anything either.
I am assuming that the pedal is full since you didn't say otherwise.
Your problem is most likely the brake booster. pump the brakes several times with the engine off to relieve any built up vacuum. While pressing down on the brake pedal start the engine. If the booster is working properly the pedal will move slightly down then press back against your foot. If it doesn't do this replace the booster.
If this doesn't help reply with more information and I will try to help you out.
Good Luck

Changing my 1989 from 4 wheel drive to 2 wheel drive and Anti-Locking Braking System

An ABS system will have wheel sensors installed. Remove one of your wheels and look for a wiring harness that runs to your steering knuckle(the part that you brake rotor and strut is attached to. Also, either you front half shaft or brake rotor will have what looks like gear teeth on them. These are the magnets the sensor reads. If your Jeep has either of these it has an ABS system. Secondly the chassis on the Cherokees should be the same irregardless of trim level (limited vs regular). These trim levels affect the interior trim and power extras only not the mechanical parts.
