Inspect the flywheel, Remove the starter and turn the engine with a socket from the front damper while checking the flywheel for missing teeth. Also check that is not cracked.
I hope this helps!!

1991 Toyota celica turns over but wont crank

If you can hear something turning but your engine is not cranking over either your drive gear on your starter motor is sticking and not engaging or your starter drive and/or flywheel ring gear teeth are worn away. Remove your starter motor and chech the drive gear can be moved. If ti is sticking wind it down and spray it with wd40. Don't be tempted to put grease on it. If it is a pre-engaged motor it could be gear wear or sticking mechanism.

What would be the problem with our toyota 4runner starter motor that when we turn the key the starter motor just makes a grinding noise, is it the starter motor or something else??

The grinding noise is the starter hitting the fly wheel. This means that the starter is spinning but may not be engaging all the way. Your Flywheel is probably missing a few teeth now. I recommend replacing starter and flywheel. If you're on a tight budget then you could just replace the starter but it will cost you more in the long run.

How to remove the STARTER FOR 2000 TOYOTA CELICA GTS

From E-How because I didn't want to type all the steps :-)
Instructions
    • 1 Disconnect the negative battery terminal and place the wheel chocks behind the rear tires of the car.
    • 2 Jack the car up using the automobile jack and place a jack stand under the car near the jacking point. Raise the jack stand up to the frame of the car.

    • 3 Crawl under the car and tag the wires on the starter according to their location using the masking tape and the marker. Disconnect the wires using a wrench to remove the nuts. Unplug the wiring harness from the solenoid.
    • 4 Remove the bolts from the starter using a socket and ratchet. Take care when removing the last bolt that the starter does not simply fall out and hit you.
    • 5 Put the new starter in place and bolt it in using the socket and ratchet. Reconnect the wires according to the labels you made and tighten the nuts with a wrench. Plug the wire harness back into the solenoid.
    • 6 Remove the jack stand and lower the car back to the ground.
    • 7 Reconnect the negative battery terminal and start the car to test the installation.

Just replaced the trans on a 1991 toyota Celica. Now the starter doesn't work. Put a new starter in and same problem. It clicks like the solenoid is working but won't turn. Checked the battery and it's...

I recommend bench testing the starter. If it works then you may have a seized engine or there may be a problem with tranny installiation or rebuild.
