Question about 2004 Lincoln Town Car

1 Answer

2004 town car signature ride is rough

Ride is rough unless there is a lot of weight in the trunk of the car. Car was bought with a trailer hitch already installed. Could it be the suspension was stiffened up to haul a trailer load.

Leveling & air ride system is working fine no problems there.

  • jackpot212 Apr 13, 2009

That might be the problem and if so where would the adjustment for the leveling system be found.

Not getting much info other than there is solenoids on top of or near each air bag, that are electrically tripped to allow air in & out as necessary. The system probably has height sensors at each wheel, that may have to be adjusted individually as I said earlier, they may even look like little rods. Maybe a trip or call to dealer or even a place that specializes in shocks etc, may be the ticket to a quick solution. Personally, I'd start at the pump (compressor) and have a look, then follow the airlines back. Just be careful if you do though, because if you hit or trip the wrong thing and it deflates the bags, without safety stands under frame of vehicle, and wheels off the ground clearly, you could be in trouble. My guess is that there is a simple adjustment. Let me know what they say, and in the meantime, I'll keep digging, or someone who's been there, done that, may step in.

There may be one for entire system at pump, or they all may have to be adjusted individually, at each wheel area. Let me see if I can find more on that particular system & get back to you.

Perhaps adjusting leveling system for lower pressure may help. I would assume it has that option. Does your Lincoln appear to be riding slightly higher than others you've seen by chance? Higher it rides when not loaded, stiffer it's going to be.

Good chance. No /leveling, or air ride system I presume.

Do you still have the air ride on your Town Car? You may want to look into replacing it with one of Strutmasters non air conversion kits. The coil spring conversion gives you the support you need in the rear with out the sagging down from the air. Great prices and great service, check out

What weight can i tow with a 2004 camry

The weight the car will tow and the weight it can legally tow are two different things. You need to check on the law where you are. Whatever you tow observing the manufacturer's noseweight limits is important unless the rear suspension is modified.

I have just ordered a new caravan with a ball weight of 175kg. do I need a weight distribution hitch?

A question often ask and much disregarded
although the tow bar weight is within limits
the load distribution bars ( torque bars -stabilizer bars --sway bars etc) not only help distribute the load but act in such a way as to stop the trailer /caravan for developing the sway that tends to make the driver loose control at speed
they also , when properly adjusted, keep the ride height of the towing vehicle level and that improves stability
remember that although the bar weight is 175 kgs that amounts to a load of 525kgs over the rear axle or extra 525 kgs on the rear tires ( mass multiplied by distance from drive axle or rear wheels assuming the distance from the axle/tires to the tow ball is i meter---heavier if the bar is further back from the tires )
to use the distribution bars lifts that weight off the rear axle and places more of the load on the trailer wheels
As a result the car / trailer combination is much safer to operate than without the bars

Vehicle towing capacity chart

A) Depends on the hitch you have and what it is rated for. Most car hitches (non truck or SUV) have a tounge weight rating of 500 LBS. This is the weight that is put on the actual connection of car and trailer. B) To not kill your transmission, do not exceed a total trailer weight of more than 1/2 the vehicles curb weight. (Dry weight of car full of fuel) Car transmissions and frames were not originally designed for towing, and exceeding 1500 LBS total trailer weight is considered dangerous (can get trailer weave and sway easily) and will cause excessive strain on drive train components. U-Haul has an online guide that will basically tell what type of trailer you can haul and its maximum allowed weight.

Does the lincoln town car serie ejecutiva have a cd player?

The Town Car Executive series is the bottom line of the Town Cars.
It has the fittings to put a CD Player in...but most did not have them (unless specially ordered)

The next series the Signature Series and has a 50 / 50 chance of having a CD player.
After that, the Presidential Series (special ordered series had the players)
Then top of the line Lincoln Town Car is the Cartier...with all the bells & whistles...and CD Player.

If ya have one...its in the trunk usually on the drivers side just below the "air ride" switch.

Front and back tire pressure when used to pull 24ft. travel trailer

I used to run a tire store so I can tell you that this will vary a lot according to how your trailer rides... tongue weight ECT. Do a quick check on the door frame and on the door itself of the truck, sometimes the manufacturer will supply " fully loaded " tire pressure. Also, make sure you are running the same ply tires that are called out on that plate or heavier. If nothing is listed for fully loaded pressure ... then I would start at a couple of pounds less than the max pressure that the tire is rated for. Hook up your trailer with full weight on your hitch. Look and see if it squats the tire more than usual. You don't want very much squatting or you will wear out the side wall of the tire and cause a blow out. Now the front tires should be OK the way they are, but make sure they are of EQUAL PRESSURE. Take a SHORT TEST DRIVE and see how the vehicle rides and performs. If the ride is bone jarring you can decrease the pressure in increments of two pounds at a time until you get a little better ride. This is a play off ... RIDE VS. HANDELING. WATCH FOR TIRE SQUAT ! And remember to check your pressure frequently on the road as it will increase as the tires get warm.
I hope this helps you,

Air ride warning light on,after changing to coil springs.

Go to the diagnostic connector for the air suspension in the trunk and cut the DG/LG wire and tape it up. This should put it out but let me know if doesn't.
