Question about 1990 Chevrolet Suburban
Went to start, but occasionaly this truck does nothing for a couple of tries, then fires right up and no problem for couple of months.this time i held key to start for 10-15 seconds and big poof of white smoke from vents at bottom of windshield.lost power to inst. cluster and stereo wont turn on,but will eject cd.dome and headlights still work, but no dash or ind.lights come on. 1990 gmc suburban with f.i. 350 and 700r4.
Under your hood, on the firewall just above and too the left of your master cylinder is a black terminal that has two studs sticking out of it with about six or seven wires running to it, you may want to make sure that they are all intact. The fact a puff of white smoke came out of those vents is likely an indication of an electrical problem under the hood. This would also explain the starting situation, the instrument lights, etc. The symptoms you are describing say there is a short in your electrical system, more specifically your ignition. the reason the cd will still eject is because that function is run from the direct power source that provides your deck with memory for channels and cd tracks etc. Also, with that puff of white smoke, you probably lost your accessory fuse/ radio fuse. If it got hot enough to smoke because of the short, it definitely popped a 25-30 amp fuse. If the wiring under your hood is original, check to make sure you are not shorting out through the primary cable that goes from your positive battery terminal to the alternator. This cable goes across your intake manifold, thrrough a loop connected to your thermostat housing and then up to the back of the alternator. there maybe a bare spot in the wire cloe to that loop causing the whole mess.
