This is a known problem with the power steering which will probably require replacement of the power steering motor. The HHR uses an electric 12V DC motor to provide the power steering force, and they have started failing.

GM is recalling the Cobalt and other vehicles for this issue, but not yet the HHR. If you are out of warranty, you will probably be personally responsible for the cost of diagnostics and replacement.

You will probably need to contact your dealer unless you are able to replace the motor yourself. Sorry.

You have what they call a hydro boost system, the power steering pump give power steering assist, and give power brakes, so if your power steering hose looses fluid you get not power steering and no power brakes, So check the power steering hose for leaks if there is no leaks replace the powersteering pump

My power steering was fine then suddenly it started to go stiff and then a slight whine when turning the wheel. refilled the power steering fluid, it took a whole 1 litre jug and was fine for a few...

It should like you may have a leak if it took a whole litre. Once you fix the leak you may also find the power steering pump still makes noise. This can be repaired by replacing the pump. I hope this helps.

My 2004 Chevy Malibu Maxx' power steering light has been coming on and off for over six months now. I haven't had any problems with handling until this am. It was very hard to steer. I let the car sit and...

This was a on going problem for the malibu's, there in a factory recall on it but weather it would be good ?? the power steering on these was electric assist which is inline with the steering column, believe me, you will never have a complete loss of steering, it turns into "old school steering" were you need to use a little muscle to turn it. Three places to check for problems are, the 60 amp fuse in the power Distribution box under the hood , Connectors at the assist motor under drivers side dash, or oil pressure switch connector.

Check engine light stays on.

You've made the correct decision. Let the dealership diagnose the issue. They'll tell you EXACTLY what the problem is and what's needed to fix it (parts, labor, tax, time-frame, etc.).
