Question about 1996 Jeep Cherokee Country

1 Answer

Engine stops as soon as gas peddle is released.

My car starts up O.K.. But as soon as I release the gas peddle, the engine cuts. If I restart the care and keep my foot on the gas, I can drive forever! If I stop for a second, the car dies again and I have to restart again.

This happened before about a week ago. But then the problem corrected itself. This all started after I had a tune-up. But I do not know if this is at all related.

How do I know where and what the vacuum lines are?

  • shyp1 Apr 13, 2009

And also, how would I change the idle, if needed.

It sounds like that when they tuned up the vehicle they may have broken a vaccum line on the motor. What you need to do is check all the vaccum lines on the motor and look for one that is off or is still on and has a crack running down the side on it. This happens quite frequently on older vehicled where the lines have dried out from age and you move them and they crack without you even knowing. The other option is that when they tuned the car up they lowered the idle too much and it worked ok while there but in a few days the ports for the idle start to clog back up and then the car stalls at low idle. My bet would be that you have a vaccum line that is either off or cracked. Good Luck, RAC

The vaccum lines are the small black hoses a quarter of an inch or so in diameter that you see on the top of the engine. They connect to different parts of the engine. They usually do not have a clamp on them unless they are the larger ones for smog and braking systems. You will probably have one or more connected to the botton of the aircleaner unless the vehicle uses fuel injection and the air cleaner is off to the side of the engine with a big 3" to 4" black hose clampped on it. You probably need to clarify if the vehicle is fuel injected of carburated. It makes a differance to where the idle control screw is located. There are two types of fuel injection, throttle body - it looks similar to a carburator and manifold which has fuel rails with the injector sticking into the intake manifold for each cylinder. I haven't worked on that particular model for may years and don't remember which type of fuel distribution system it has. Hope this helps, RAC

My 2001 Buick Regal will only start if press the gas pedal, when I release the gas pedal to step on the brake the engine shuts off. Any Ideas?

Could be a dirty throttle body or a faulty idle air control valve.
The computer controls idle speed by regulating the amount of air entering the intake thru the throttle body.

Starter cranked over and the car wont start for my 2004 Acura TSX. Managed to start engine with gas pedal down but stopped as soon as the pedal was released.

it sounds to me like a fuel delivery problem. check or change fuel filter, and see if it takes care of problem. the worst case, is a weak fuel pump! check the filter first. good-day !

Unsteady idle, drops too low when coming off the gas.

could be fuel starvation when changing over from one fuel to another.end of one/start of another, especially when engine cold and running on richer mixture .answer is only change when car is at normall temp.sorry but this is in the gas convertion manual....

Gas tank

Perhaps you are doing nothing wrong. Fuel delivery also includes the fuel filter but that would ordinaryly show on higher engine speed starvation. Does engine move forward in engine bay when you release pressure on gas pedal? If so, it may be a bad electrical connection Check ground connections and wiring. Once car stops, engine settles back in original position to start again.Just some possible problems to this sympton. Is there a vacuum leak at idle?

No passing gear

My car did (past tense) the same thing. The service engine light is flashing until you let off the gas because raw fuel is being dumped into the catalytic converter. The transmission won't shift because the converter is plugged. When you push the pedal to the floor the transmission computer holds the transmission in gear. Meanwhile the engine computer is raising the rpms. It will seem like a transmission problem but it is more likely a plugged catalytic converter. I had converter changed. The engine has A LOT more power, great acceleration and the transmission shifts perfectly.

hello from what you explained i take it theres no check engine lights on what it sounds like is a basic increase on your idle screw get somone to help push pedal down underhood look to see where gas cable pulls back when gas pedals appled have them release slowly now watch where it stops against a set screw that is your adjustment rpm range should be somewhere between 750-900 rpm depending on vehicle if this doesnt solve most likely tps sensor{ throttle position sensor} goodluck
