Question about 1988 Ford Taurus

1 Answer

Fuse constantly blows in my car.

I have a 1988 ford taurus with a Panasonic CQ-C7205U/C7105U head unit.

It has been fine since it has been installed up until about 4 days ago.
The fuse blew, I though, big deal. I replaced it, and it blew the next day. It has been blowing every day since then.

It has not blown while the stereo is turned on. I have never heard/witnessed it blowing, its always when I go to turn my car on, the fuse is blown.

It is a 15 amp fuse for the head unit, and the inside lights and dash lights that keeps blowing.

I have taken the head unit out and looked for exposed wire within the harness area, but couldn't find anything.

Did your radio only work with the tail lights on when the lights did work? There is definarely a short. If you can, get an automatic circuit breaker that fits in olace of the fuse. This is a trick I used when detecting shorts. The breaker will reset every few seconds and you won't have to keep replacing fuses The lights will go on and off as the breaker trips and resets and will stop cycling when you find the problem. This way gives you time to wiggle and wait wiring and connections and even disconnect things to narrow it down.--- Good luck........ Stay focused on any new wiring in the lighting circuit including the bulbs. Anything the switch controls including the switch. The auto breaker is available at parts stores and if you can't get one from a car parts store, Truck dealers do carry them. Get one that is lower than the one it csalls for. Ie; It normally calls for a 15 amp, get a10 amp. It will cycle faster. Do not bypass the fuse for there is a risk of fire. The breaker makes it a one man job . This trick has saved me a ton of diagnostic time.

Why would a 1988 ford taurus horn blow constantly in the middle of the night

There is a horn relay. If the relay fails it can complete the power circuit to the horn regardless of any input from the steering wheel horn buttons. Only way to remedy the situation is to disconnect the battery and replace the horn relay.

My 2002 ford taurus power window fuse always blown

constant and instant blowing fuse is a short circuit. if man-handling and manipulating the wiring harness as it comes thru the frame to the door doesn't make any difference, it's almost always a bad window regulator/motor assembly inside the door cavity behind the panel, but can be the (a) switch as well. remove the door handle or perhaps an access panel to gain access to the wiring harness. unplug the switches and pigtail connector to the regulator/motor. replace fuse and turn key on. if short is inside the door the fuse won't blow. reconnect one connector (or switch) at a time to isolate shorted component or wire. replace bad component or repair wire.

your lights are grounding out some where you will have to check for a dead short in the wiring use a volt meter in the resitance mode and track through you power side of the lights untill you find your dead short, start at the back and work your way to the fuse box pull the fuse and follow the wire. there is a short in it it will just take some time going through look for worn coating, cracks, or melted.
good luck & and happy hunting
