SOURCE: how do i replace the front caliper seal on 06

while the seals in the calipers are replaceable, its probably easier just to get a new/re manufactured caliper. if for any reason the seals don't work perfectly you could lose control of the vehicle when attempting to stop. with that said i'll try to explain the best i can how to replace the seals in the calipers for that vehicle.

1. jack up the front of the vehicle, place on jackstands and remove the front wheels, make sure the parking brake is on
2. unbolt the caliper and unbolt the brake line from the caliper and take caliper to a clean bench
3. remove the dust boot retaining ring on the caliper that holds the boot to the caliper itself
4. using a blowgun with a rubber tip apply low pressure compressed air where the brake line was bolted to the caliper to push the piston out of the bore (be carefull and ready because the piston may shoot out with some force)
5. when the piston comes out you will need to replace the dust boot and the seal so remove the boot and seal carefully so you don't scratch the piston ( the seal is actually in the caliper piston bore hole)and throw out the old seal and boot.
6. inspect all the surfaces and make sure there are no imperfections at all on the piston, the piston bore, or the caliper, if the surfaces are marred in anyway, replace the caliper, if they are good, using brake cleen and compressed air clean all parts then dry them
7. get the new seal and lubricate with DOT 3 brake fluid
8. install new seal into the caliper bore
9. apply a thin coat of DOT 3 brake fluid to the piston itself
10. install bottom half the the caliper piston into the caliper bore.
11. install new dust boot seal onto the piston
12. compress the piston to the bottom of the caliper bore
13. fully seat the dust boot seal into the caliper and install retaining ring
14. reinstall on vehicle (make sure to use a NEW copper washer on the brake line to caliper fitting) and bleed the braking system while checking for leaks.

repeat process for the other side.

if the caliper leaks at all from the piston after seal replacement, replace the caliper.

make sure you properly bleed the brakes before attempting to drive your car.

SOURCE: 2006 malibu maxx - the rear brake caliper will not

If you are replacing the rear pads and are trying to retract the caliper pistons here is what you need to do.
Use a piston installation tool in order to twist the brake caliper piston into the brake caliper bore.
If you do not have the tool you can retract the piston by using a needle nose plier.
Exert downward force and rotate clockwise until the piston bottoms out.
Before installing be sure the two "U" shaped slots are at 6:00 and 12:00 Oclock.

How can I tell if my emergency brake is damaged on my rear caliper on a 2005 Chevy Malibu maxx

Remove the wheel and have someone depress the e-brake while observing cable operation. The cable should pull the brake arm on the caliper and release the arm when the e-brake pedal is released.

How do i change front wheel bearings in my 2005 malibu maxx

Easy one but you need a few tools. Remove the big axle nut in the center of the hub, the brake caliper, the brake caliper bracket, the rotor. Then look around behind the knuckle, there will be 3 or 4 bolts that hold the bearing assembly in the knuckle, remove them and the abs connector, then pull the bearing out of the knuckle.

Is the emergency brake on a 2005 malibu maxx lt a disc or drum brake

The emergency brake is just a cable that runs to the rear brakes of the car to actuate the rear brakes, so what ever your rear brakes are.

2006 Malibu Maxx - rotors were out of round.

In order to retract the pistons on the rear calipers you need to use a special tool that will rotate the piston in a clockwise direction. It may be possible to try to use a strong needle nose plier.Apply force against the U shaped slots on the piston and rotate clockwise until the piston bottoms out. Before you reinstall the caliper make sure that the recessed slots are at 12 and 6 "o"clock..the slots align with one or two bumps on the inside pad.
If you are having problems with your calipers rebuilt one are a good option. If only the caliper slide pins are sticking they can be cleaned and lubricated.Pin lubricant sometimes comes with a set of brake pads.Other than that lube may be purchased separately at an automotive supply store.

Clunk sound when turning left in 2005 Chev Malibu

I have 3 2005 Malibus - 1 Maxx LT, 1 Sedan LT, and 1 Sedan LS. All three needed to have the steering rod replaced by 50K miles. You'd feel a muted clunk through the wheel when turning. The other light clunk issue I had with the Maxx was I hit a parking curb and it broke the lower radiator bracket. In certain bumps you'd feel a light clunk. A new $22 bracket fixed the issue and now I make sure I never pull too far into the spaces in the garage at work.

How to compress Rear Disc Brake Cylinder

if there is a cable and spring attached to the caliper then it is the twist back kind. you need a special tool to rotate the piston back and do not force it. it will ruin the caliper. and also some cars one will turn clockwise and one will go counter clock wise i dont think this is the case with your car but if it doesnt want to turn back try changing the direction.
