This truck should have a timing chain, not a belt. If the engine is running fine and there are no noises such as the chain hitting the timing cover, you are OK.

Im looking to put an engine in my 1988 ford ranger, i would like to know what kind and size of engine i can fit into a 2.9 v6 slot. i have already lifted it so its big and i sized up the tires.

With enough talent and enough money and enough time, pretty much anything is possible.

I know a fellow that put 5.0 in an older Ranger without any huge problems.

It'll be interesting! Have Fun!
