I think its the transmission when you start the car put it in drive it stalls in drive or reverse but if you put it in low 4wd it will drive and back up.

air filter is new..someone said it could be a vapor lock?

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

I'd take a look at the engine and make sure you are actually making adequate power. If not, the reason it will go better in 4wd low would be that it is a lower than normal gearing and does not put as much load on the engine. Granted, you may have a trans problem but it will need better and more specific diagnosis to determine what's going on.

Check your air filter, if its dirty your engine could not be putting out enough power in the higher gears

2005 GMC Envoy XL 4WD is stuck in neutral. How do l get it unstuck?

Q1: REVERSE IS DEAD TOO?>
no VIN told or if transmission is automatic. or manual
no engine told of 3 and tranny size matches engine power
4L60-e transmission is on 5.0L gm engine.
I think most Envoy are A/T boxes. USA, shows this .
PRNDL. Reverse. Drive and Low fail? say those words
is east,.
the transmission needs service, vast problems possible
they are complex.

causes, top:(SCAN THE PCM IS WISE SEE IF IT SEES A HUGE PROBLEM THERE.) BUT REVERSE DEAD IS A VERY BAD SIGN. SCAN THE PCM FOR SOLENOID ERRORS!
  1. ATF oil leaked out of box and now dry, diP stick it? ATF smells burnt or looks like TAG is bad news. or metal flakes in the ATF DRIPPED TO A SHEET OF PAPER.
  2. fuses blown but most time reverse still works.!!!
  3. transmission shift linkage failed. (the service manual covers the steps to check that, Read the SM?)
  4. transmission shift solenoids bad. (reverse? has none)
  5. transmission is bad. (means removal time)
NOW IF REVERSE FAILS
ALL THESE THINGS HAPPEN TO ATTAIN IT.
you asked so here is a complex answer, (not all)
AND LOTS MORE TO FAIL.

When I shift manual shifter from 4 wheel drive back to 2 wheel drive, truck does not want to return to 2 wheel drive. Dash light goes off as expected. No service light comes on. I did put truck in reverse...

Just to confirm, you don't have an electrical 4WD selector; you have to move a shifter on the floor of our cab? If that's the case, I'd suspect that you have a linkage misalignment or malfunction that doesn't allow the 4WD selector to completely return to the 2WD position. Putting the truck into reverse and back to drive probably causes a jolt to the 4WD linkage which disengages the transfer case from the driveline. Check for slack or binding in the transfer case shift level linkage (clean and lube the linkage won't hurt).

1999 GMC suburban and just out of the blue the transmission started to make a grinding noise mind you this is a 4wd unit it still will go but acts like it stuck in low gear and no reverse I tried different...

The sun-shell in the transmission has cracked if you do not have reverse, and are in a low gear range with no overdrive. As for the grinding, that is the remnants of the sun-shell.

My 4x4 is stuck in four wheel low it is shift on the fly and i have already replaced the transfer case motor

Ok here is a long shot but sometimes it will work. Put the 4wd position switch to 4wd Lo, put your transmission in reverse and back up for about 50 yards, stop and put your transmission in neutral, then shift the 4wd to 4wd hi, wait a few seconds and shift the 4wd to 2wd hi, Sometimes the t-case will get stuck and this is how you reset the computer. I have known people that really got their t-cases messed up because they thought that shift on the go meant that they could shift the t-case into 4wd LO while moving but shift on the go is only for 4wd hi the gears will not mesh up fast enough for 4wd LO because the ratio is 1 to 1 . I hope this helps you.

94 Chrysler Concorde Tranny Problems

Have your transmission oil filter changed;
it is located under the transmission pan
The oil is what makes the transmission shift
When you shut off the engine it stops the transmission pump then when you start up again the transmission shifts until the filter clogs again
