It sounds like your clutch has been severely adjusted in wrong direction.

I have a 1997 Saab se turbo 2.0 the check gearbox light comes on then a week or so later will go out any help would be great thanks keith

Check engine and check gearbox on an automatic...neutral safety switch is going out. First couple starts like that and it seems like it's in limp home is. A few more starts and it will reset itself. Mine did so reliably at the 5th restart until I changed it.

Get a used on if you can, they are not really rebuildable reliably. Pain to change, it's under the battery tray and miserable to get to.

Car has a tendecy to surge rpm when at idle or first put into gear seems to stop when engine becomes hot

Quite likely to be idle bypass valve. On older Saabs, this was located in two hoses near the throttle body, but now they are usually integral to the throttle body. A quick and low risk way is to remove the bypass valve (unplug the electrical connector first) and clean it and the seating in the throttle body. Try putting the connector back on, turn ignition on, before replacing the valve in the body. It should move smoothly, if it does, then hopefully, you have a cure, if not, try another clean or buy a replacement. If it does move smoothly it wasn't the idle bypass valve and more diagnosis will be required.

The switch needs to be replaced and it requires some special tools if it's in the steering column. If it's on the floor any shade tree mechanic can do it.

Saab 1997 900 - car suddenly shuts off while driving

I have been trying to figure out the same on my 95' Saab 900 V6 . I am a Mechanic and this thing has been a real Pickle if you know what I mean/ I pulled the ignition switch and the contacts on the plug were corroded and suspect that I am not getting a good enough contact inside the unit . (The reason why I have not suspected this is because it was replaced in 03' with a new one, but the way in it mounted vertically has got to be a reason for corrosion.)Might have been due to the sunroof been left open in the rain. So I would suggest replacing the IGNITION SWTICH with a new one, or used (with warranty i.e. Ebay) one if possible. Also put some Electrical tape on the new unti so it will never get any moisture inside>

Starting problem

check your reverse swich. if the switch doesnt see connection, being out of reverse/in reverse, then the ignition switch will not get supply power. look for swiches/sensors by the shifter and ignition swich for possible faulty switch/sensor. hope this helps

1985 saab wont start the key will not even turn

If the key won't turn it sounds like a problem with the reverse gear locking device. You'll need to remove the gearlever/ignition housing and replace or reset the 3 gears inside. If the ignition barrel is faulty you'll still need to remove the assembly to get it out.
