Question about 1997 BMW 318

1 Answer

95 325 is e-brake doesn't fully engage

I had it parked on a steep drive way last night and it started rolling. E brake was pulled as far back as physically possible and I left it in first gear. Once we saw that I jumped in turned it on and tried to pull back up. I had it in first with the clutch fully released and my gas stomped to the ground and was still rolling backwards. How can I fix this?

Adjustment will usually help, but try parking with front pointing down hill next time.(back in, apply E brake .) Emergency brakes usually hold better/well when vehicle front heading down hill. If it doesn't hold with front pointing down, then rear brakes need attention.

Its sitting in park.will roll back an forth like its in neutral. turn key, nothing happens. have full battery.could it be a neutral safety switch?

It sounds like your transmission is not going into park. There is a safety switch which is why you have to engage the brake while the vehicle is in park to start it. It is not sending current thru because it is not registering that the vehicle is in park. Try engaging the emergency brake and taking the transmission to drive then back into park and see if it engages. Then try to turn the ignition and see if you have power to your gauges and ignition switch.

WHAT IF YOUR CAR STARTS ROLLING IN GEAR

Please be more specific. Most cars with automatic transmissions will roll forward in Drive or backwards in Reverse. If the car is on a slope, it can roll due to gravity, even backwards in a forward gear. If you mean the car is rolling when it's in Park, either the transmission is faulty or it's not fully engaging in Park. A third possibility is that you mean that, after stopping with the brakes, the car begins to roll with your foot still on the brake. That would be a brake problem. If you've had the car for a while and this is a noticeable change, take it to a mechanic and have it checked. Explain your concerns clearly.

Car wont start and rolls backwards even though it apears to be in park

Sounds like the shifter is stuck in reverse or drive since it will roll.
I would set the parking brake and have someone watch the shift lever on the transmission to see if it and the shifter inside is still connected.

Gear question

Assuming this is a standard transmission, you always have it in 1st gear. Roll back is controlled by balancing the clutch with the gas pedal.

If an automatic transmission, then the vehicle should hold itself on the incline, unless it is a steep incline, to which you may use the gas pedal to hold the vehicle on the slope, and not the brake. And you would always have the transmission in the main drive gear position.

My car is pulling back a little when i drive it

Drive it around the block then feel each wheel...is one hotter than the others? The brake may be stuck on that wheel.Stop on a slight hill and put the car in neutral....does it roll?It should if the brakes are fully released.
Is it a smooth pulling back?
If it is a little random jerky pulling back......the 70% cause of this is bad spark plug wires and or spark plugs on these vehicles.

The parking brake on my Volvo XC90 does not release when pulling on the release lever, can I release it manually so that I can drive it to the shop for repair?

Not from up top inside the car if it's frozen.

Sounds like it's been engaged quiet tight. So start the vehicle try depressing the release button and lifting up firmly instead of trying to immediately push downward on it to release.

Do that while lightly easing the vehicle in reverse if parked downhill to take pressure of the brake or in drive if parked uphill.

2005 is relatively new and I don't presume the cable has frozen nor snapped in the engaged position.

It's common when the brake has been engaged on a steep incline and drifted forward or the wheels curbed quiet snugly to avert rolling.

Will not engage into park and will not start now

The vehicle should start if you put the transmission into neutral. I would try to let the car roll just a hair, apply the brake pedal and put the car into park.

I have a 2006 saturn ion, my daughter has it at college in pennsy, she parked it on a driveway last night before it snowed and she engaged the emerg brake since it was a sloped driveway, today she went to...

Have her try putting it into drive, attempt to go foreward, plant her foot firmly on the brake, put it back into neutral, then try to release hand brake. Other than that, the only thing she can do is to try and warm up brake cables (shielded part near the backing plates) with a hair dryer.(in park, so it dosen't roll over her) This generally happens when water gets into cable shield and freezes Once free, spray some wd40 or other solvent into cable opening and on cables themselves.
