Look on the drivers side, should be a long tube about half way up the block. Have fun with this. If you want to replace the cooler and not the end caps there is a trick to putting it back together without a large press. You can ( if the wheels are not chrome) place the caps on as far as you can and put a long bar in the opening of the from wheel, this seems to be just right for leverage to push down on the end cap to fit it onto the new cooler. Be VERY carefull not to break the end caps though.

Water detected in sump would it come from the oil cooler


Would need more information on the year, manufacturer, model and engine size. That said, most engine oil coolers do not use engine coolant as a cooling medium. They are mounted in front of the radiator and use air cooling. If that is the case, water in the sump would most likely be due to a blown head gasket, cracked head, or cracked engine block.
Oil coolers for automatic transmissions are often installed internal to the vehicle radiator, and if one of these breaks, then coolant will infiltrate the transmission sump and transmission oil will infiltrate the cooling system.

Oil getting into water


if it is an automatic ( make and model omitted in question) there is every chance that it is transmission oil from a burst cooler in the radiator tank. The fix is a new radiator or and air to air cooler core fitted in front of the radiator. If the engine is a diesel or an engine that has a sump oil cooler then the oil core has burst allowing engine oil into the radiator vial the coolant system. It may be from a failing head gasket where the oil hole to the rocker gear is leaking across to a water jacket

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
  2. Drain the engine oil and remove the oil filter housing.

  1. Loosen the oil cooler outlet (1) and the inlet (2) lines from the engine block.
  2. Lower the vehicle.
  3. Remove the intake plenum.
  4. Remove the intake manifold.

  1. Disconnect the following electrical connectors from the water crossover:
    • The engine coolant temperature sender (2)
    • The engine coolant temperature sensor (4)

  1. Remove the water crossover bolts (1).
  2. Remove the water crossover upper and lower seals (2).

  1. Loosen the upper heat shield bolts on the left side of the exhaust manifold.

  1. Remove the oil cooler outlet line from the engine oil cooler.
  2. Remove the oil cooler inlet line from the engine oil cooler.

  1. Note the positioning of the 4 seals.

  1. Position the oil feed and return,lines out of the way and secure with mechanic wire.
  2. Remove the engine oil cooler, inlet and outlet nuts (1).
  3. Remove the engine oil cooler cover bolts (2).

  1. Remove the engine oil cooler cover.
  2. Remove the engine oil cooler.
  3. Clean all sealing surfaces.
Installation Procedure

  1. Install the engine oil cooler.
  2. Apply a 2 mm (0.08 inch) bead of RTV silicone sealant, GM P/N 12346240, in the groove around the engine oil cooler cover.
  3. Install the engine oil cooler cover.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

  1. Install the engine oil cooler cover bolts (2). Tighten the engine oil cooler cover bolts to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.).
  2. Install the engine oil cooler inlet and outlet nuts (1). Tighten the engine oil cooler inlet and outlet nuts to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
  3. Reposition the oil feed and return lines.

  1. Install the oil cooler outlet and install the oil cooler inlet lines to the engine oil cooler. Use 4 new seals.
Tighten the oil feed and return lines to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.).

    • Position the crossover.
    • Install the upper and lower seals (2).
    • Install the water crossover bolts (1). Tighten
Tighten the water crossover bolts to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.).
  1. Connect the electrical connectors at the following locations:
    • The engine coolant temperature sensor (4)
    • The engine coolant temperature sender (2)
  1. Install the intake manifold.
  2. Install the intake plenum.
  3. Raise the vehicle.

  2. Install the oil cooler inlet (2) line to the engine block. Tighten the oil cooler inlet (2) line to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.).
  3. Install the oil filter housing to the engine block. Tighten the oil filter housing to 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.).
  4. Lower the vehicle.

If no external leak and the transmission fluid colour looks white, the problem belongs to the automatic gearbox oil cooler. The oil cooler has broke mixing the gearbox oil and coolant causing this milkshake. It's a small radiator core type oil / water heat exchanger. It is cracked inside and transmission oil is mixed with engine coolant. Because the transmission oil pressure is greater than engine coolant pressure, the transmission fluid level drops. See also the coolant colour inside recovery coolant reservoir inder bonnet! It could be like this:

I got 2001 ford f350 7.3 powerstroke. too much smoke,when start engine and running the vehicle. code p0603


if the smoke is white you have a water vapor problem and it will probably be your egr water cooler and oil cooler. if the smoke is blue, you may have a blown head-gasket or it could be the oil cooler also. take it to a ford dealer and let them put it on their computor, it will cost you a little but it will confirm what you may already know. hope this help's.

Hello: The oil cooler is not in the radiator. The oil cooler is under the intake manifold which has to be removed to replace the oil cooler.

my 97 f350 powerstroke dide the same thing it ended up being the trany if screwed. It needs to be rebuild chances are the planitarys are bad and dumped iron into the valve body
