Question about Dodge Ram 1500

1 Answer

1995 dodge ram 1500 pick up I can let it idle for 15 to 20 mins getting up to temp . The check engine light comes on but still no problem . Then I drive it a few miles and when I stop with it in gear or in park it has a very rough idle and gets worse to the point where it stalls out . I can then restart and it will be fine till repeat the above driving condition. I did the ignition on off deal and got the following codes 12 , 21, 34, 37 the only thing I have recently done was install a new audio system. It has seperate power to the battery and this happens when all the audio is off as well. It was fine till yesterday when I was sitting in the drive letting it idle as to not drain the battery while I was adjusting all the presets ect for the head unit. That is when I noticed the check engine light came on . I drove to auto zone to check it and it stalled out there but they dont have the older scanner required for my truck.

Hi Monkeypaint!
I assume you have power brakes and I gather that it idles properly at times, but dies when the brakes are applied. This sound like a leaking power brake assist vacuum line or diaphram. You can verify this by locating the big vacuum hose connecting the intake manifold to the assist diaphram. This will be about an inch in diameter connected to the round item behind the brake master cylinder next to the firewall.

  1. Disconnect the line at the intake manifold end, and plug the vacuum port on the manifold with a tapered rubber stopper or cap.
  2. Being aware that you now do NOT have power assist to the brakes (requiring CONSIDERABLY more pedal pressure to stop!!!), see if the problem goes away. If it does, you have narrowed it down to the assist diaphram or the hose. If it still persists, it is an engine tuning/control issue, not related to brakes.
  3. Do determine whether it is the vacuum hose or the cannister, remove the previously installed cap/plug, reinstall the hose to the intake manifold, disconnect it from the diaphram and plug/cap the hose at that end. Repeat step three... if the problem returns, the hose is leaking and should be replaced... If the problem still goes away, the Power Brake Assist Diaphram Cannister is leaking excessively and should be replaced.
  • ***ALSO*** Any other vacuum lines leaking can lower the manifold vacuum to a threshold level where the load of power brake assist actuation crosses the line for adequate vacuum to idle*** So check all vacuum lines underhood, looking for a pronounced hissing at vacuum leaks. A manifold vacuum gauge is a relatively inexpensive diagnostic tool that could also be useful.
Well, hope this helps, and good luck! Don't forget to rate this answer!
Thanks!

SOURCE: 95 cadillac eldorado engine stalls rough idle check engine light is on

My son has this same car with the same problem. So far after tune up and other process of illimination, the problem points to the catalytic converter. If it is clogged you will get this problem with the rough idle and stalling. Look under the car at night after running it and see if the catalytic glows red. If so you need a new one. Hope this helps.

0340 is camshaft position sensor and the other 0325 is the knock sensor. Chances are you need to replace the sensors and good to go.

SOURCE: Rough idle

I had the same exact problem on my 2004 Colorado (3.5L). Cleaned the MAF sensor (with MAF sensor cleaner) and throttle body/plate - cleared it right up.

I have a 1995 Dodge Ram 4x4 with a 5.2. Will not idle when warm.

The most logical thing to do would be to check the engine temperature sensor with an ohmmeter. (you can buy a multimeter for $3 at Harbor Freight) While I don't know exactly what it should be, I would assume most sensors go to 0 or infinite ohms when they go bad, and that this only happens after it warms up.

But you could also check the O2 sensor, air mass sensor, fuel pressure, vacuum leak, etc.
These could all do it.

While I did not know the transmission had a temp sensor, and I am not sure it would matter, that is also worth checking into.
Ask the parts counter at the dealer to show you the image of where the trans temp sensor is located.

I had the same problem with my, 03, hemi. I did not wait 15 min. turn off and back on was all that was needed to reset, "red flashing light lower right hand ". though another 8 or 9 on off's, Engin Light also goes off, untill next time. All i did was pulled off my Air Intake box and hose, so i could get to butterfly on throttle bodie, sprayed carb cleaner in there. and it was very dirty. after put back togather, give it a few.... mine did not start right up, when it did idle real ruff even died few times...Once the computer re adjusted ran like it did when i bought it....that was 2 weeks ago, still no eng light, no flashing red ones either.

Dodge Ram pick-up. Orange check engine symbol comes on. Went off for a while and now is back on. What are the potential problems?

When the chk. engine comes on and goes out and then comes on again means a sensor is not working or is working intermittedly, the only way to get an idea what it is, is to have it scaned.
