Wow. This one could get a little hairy. The airbag control module or body control module could actually be contributing to the problem, but without a chrysler scan tool there's no way that I know of to check them. I'll have to assume that they are not causing a problem and go from there, but keep in mind that I am assuming they are working properly. I have no way of knowing for sure.
First you'll have to gain access to the tcm. Take off the LF wheel and pull the splash shield back from the front of the wheel well. It's a black box held on by 3 screws I think. It has 1 big 60 way connector with an 8 or 10mm bolt in the center. Loosen but do not remove this bolt to unplug the tcm. Take a look at it for moisture, spread or otherwise damaged terminals or corrosion. Usually there's nothing there, but every now and then you find something. Now we need to start checking for proper voltages and stuff. Don't force a test light into the side of the connector that mates up to the computer. If you spread a terminal without knowing it, you may never find what's wrong. I like to use t-pins or small sewing pins. I hope to God that thing is numbered for you. I can't remember if they do that or not on the face of the connector. I'll tell you the wire colors too in case they dont and you can pierce them to get your readings. Just make sure not to cut the wire and reprotect it with electrical tape or something just as good when you're done. Connect your test light to the ground terminal on the battery. The first wire to check is in cavity 11. It's a pink wire with a white stripe and it should have 12 volts with the key on (engine off). You can use a test light for this but make sure it lights up brightly. Next, remove the starter relay from the fuse box under the hood. It should be labeled on the lid. Cavity 8 hosts a yellow wire that should have 12 volts (again, can be tested with test light) only when key is in the START position. BE SURE TO REMOVE THE STARTER RELAY BEFORE TESTING THAT WIRE. If your light lights up when you go to start, that wire is good and you can put the relay back in. Now check the yellow and red wire in cavity 56. It should be hot all the time. If it isn't check your fuses*. Now move the clamp for your test light to the positive terminal on the battery so you can check the ground circuits. Cavity 57 Black and light green and 53 black and yellow should light the test light. All that is left check is the communication circuit. DO NOT use a test light on this wire. You'll need a voltmeter and it's going to be difficult to analyze the results as different quality voltmeters will give different results. This circuit pulses 7 volts like and on/off switch. It happens VERY quickly and continuously. A digital voltmeter will bounce all over the place or sometimes just show 3.5 to 4.5 volts because it can't keep up (no matter how expensive it was). An analog voltmeter needle will bounce back and forth very rapidly but also not fast enough to reach 7 volts. The best thing I can tell you is make sure it's not 0 or 12 volts all the time, but with out an actual lab scope capable of producing a 7 volt sqare wave signal, we're gonna have to kinda guess here. Anyway, put the black lead of your meter on a good groung (like the negative terminal on the battery) and the red lead to the white and violet wire in cavity 43 of the tcm connector. If all these circuits check good and you're willing to take the leap of faith in assuming the airbag and body computers are okay, the only possible remaining cause is the tcm. If any of those wires don't check out as I described, let me know and I'll let you know what else to look for. Also, if you replace the tcm, there are some programming procedures that should be performed on it to get the best shift quality. I think the dealer would have to do that, but you might be able to get aamco to do it. Something else I just thought of - check for battery acid and corrosion on the harness under the battery. I've seen a few where the wiring was all ate up from a leaking battery. They didn't have this problem with theirs, but it IS possible. A lot of circuits are fed through that harness.
Good luck.

When they come and go like that it kinda looks like a loose connection somewhere (which may even be inside the tcm). I'd clear the code and start wiggling wires and tapping on the tcm with a screw driver or something to see if I could make the code come back. It's sometimes referred to as "the ol' screw driver test." This isn't a 100% sure fire way to find a problem, but if you tap on the tcm and the light comes on, you can be pretty confident you found the problem. And to tell you the truth, I think you're on the right track with the tcm anyway.

Won't drive or shift in 3rd gear but will reverse first and second gear

If it won't shift to 3rd and stays in second, bad shift solenoid/s. If it shifts and the transmission drops out(high RPM's), the bad clutches in the transmission. Rebuild. Solenoids around $600 to replace. Transmission rebuild around $2200.

Transmission won't come out of first gear and the whole dash board and radio doesn't work

In automatic transmissions the second to third syncronizers always seem to go bad first, the syncronizers are worn, bad or gone. This is common in these transmissions. Also you might check your trans fluid level, sometimes a low level will cause the transmission not to shift correctly.

I have a 1997 Cadillac Catera that is having shifting problems. It slips between first and second gear when I accelerate hard. The light on the dash has come on. It also chatters when in first and second...

It may help to change the transmission fluid and the filter. I'd definitely baby the tranny until you can figure out the problem.

Smell the transmission fluid for burnt smell and discoloration, it is a sign of trouble.

You may want to start shopping around for transmission shops.

Good luck!
