Clunking from front end of car when i drive it

I was driving my dirty old wore out oldsmobile 230 000 KMS on it and i went over some railroad tracks that i normally go over and i heard a loud clunk. now it makes a consistent clunking noise and the frequency of the clunking is directly proportional to the speed of the vehicle. does anyone know what i broke that could be causing this? i have parked the car until it is dry enough to work on it.

OK ill check that. i can get at cost gm parts but thanks anyways. Im actually a salesman at a gm dealership (too bad the employee's shop rate is $95/ hour.) but once i figure out what each of these components are, where on the car they are, and what they look like i will see if i can fix them

Check the upper and lower ball joints and the upper strut mounts and also check your stabilizer bar as well and if you need any GM parts try Schram auto parts 1-800-292-1032 or www.schramauto.com

if you work for GM dealership then ask at the parts department for diagrams on your car so you will know the locations and how to replace and if you have a good front end man pull him to the side and ask him to come out and look at your car and he can let you know what all you will need

Could also be the exhaust pipe making contact with something. It needs to be inspected carefully looking for contact marks.

Heard clunking noise when turning took wheels off started motor put in drive turned stering wheel heard noise did not see any movement at drive shafts did see motor shifting frount motor mount wore out...

bad motor mounts will cause some issues, bad CV joints will also cause and issue. You will need to check for both. Being a 99 you will also want to check teh front differential for the proper fluid level, this is not the same as the transmission.

2004 dodge ram 1500 2WD front end making a metal on metal sound going over small surface bumps like rail road tracks. I have had trhe front end inspected 3 times for the possible cause. All garages tell me...

Interesting problem although aggravating. Take a bottle of Dawn washing up liquid,(or equivilent) and drive the vehicle to the nearest railroad crossing. Squirt the soap all over the mounting rubbers on the shocks and anti roll /sway bar. Drive across the railroad crossing and listen for the noise. if none then you have narrowed the search. next do a simple process of elimination regarding the soaped rubber mountings etc.

However,a Dodge noise making rattle when crossing any uneven surface can be caused by the front grille securing fixtures coming loose and allowing the grille to rub and vibrate on the sheet metal. I have an older Dodge with stainless steel wiring fitted to resolve that same problem! It's not an obvious fault but it really is an aggravating one.
