SOURCE: transmission

Transmission model is 4L60E,and the symptoms you are describing is a common failure on these transmissions all the way back to it's predecesor, the 700 R 4 model. The reverse input shell, splines into the low/reverse planetary sun gear. The reverse input shell has a collar with splines made into it,and these splines are prone to stripping, and sometimes the collar itself will break free from the shell.Without the shell functioning,no reverse, and this is likely what you are hearing.Aftermarket companies sell heavy duty, and standard duty, replacements.Eventually, you will lose the forward gears also.Good luck.

SOURCE: 97 gmc pickup with automatic transmission trouble

1st thing to do is test the system for codes, the problem is most likely a failed or stuck shift solenoid indside the trans, have you ever serviced the trans, sometimes a fluid and filter cahnge will cure these kinds of issues.

SOURCE: 2001 Yukon XL SLT 4 speed Auto Transmission shift problem!

Sam,

I would start with a transmission fliud and filter service.

I would then have the trasnmission checked out by a transmission shop. The transmission most of the time has the direct drum band is starting to go. The shops can rebuild it no problem, This is a very common failure wiith the trasnmission.

Good Luck

SOURCE: reverse won't work on my 1994 GMC Surburban

If you have no reverse, more than likely, you have either a stripped or broken sunshell, assuming you have the 4L60E transmission. Are you absolutely sure you have all forward gears? Another indication of the sunshell being defective, will be no engine braking in manual second.

I hav a mercedes s350. when i drive the car shutters when it is changing gears.

It is usually a good idea to get it to a auto a mechanic if the transmissions begins shuddering, but there are some things you can check at home. If the vehicle shudders this may be a sign of low trans fluid or dirty burnt fluid.
Check the owner's manual for the location of the dipstick for the transmission pull a dipstick out and look at the fluid on the end of the dipstick if it's bright red its good if it's black or brown tis burnt you can smell it smell of burnt smell.
No idea of how many miles but if over 100k dont do a trans flush have a "trany splash" done. Flushes on high mile cars can change the fluid 100 % but not the filter. Splash changes fluid in the pan but not the torque converter. Unless there is a drain plug on converter, but a new filter will clean up the converter fluid.
Find a reputable mechanic so you dont end up with a bigger problem if its just the fluid.
Oh if when you pull the dipstick and you do do that and you see that the fluid is a little burnt or it's low always check tranny fluid when the engine is running
To get a accurate reading.

Transmission shuddering combined with transmission slippage may be a sign that too little (pluged filter) or too much fluid is making its way to the transmission. This is usually a telltale sign that the torque converter is failing.

Hope this helps a little.
Best of luck.

What could it be?

Please have someone check the transmission fluid with the dipstick.
If there is no fluid on the dipstick, you have likely "damaged" the transmission.
If there is, smell the fluid. If it smells "burned", the transmission may need to be rebuilt.
Now, start the motor and check the transmission fluid level.
Your owner's manual in the glove box will tell you whether the motor needs to be running or not, almost all the time it must be.
The transmission also needs to be "hot", which is having the motor run for 10 minutes.
Again, check the owner;'s manual for the kind of transmission fluid you can use.
Once in a while the dipstick will have that information stamped on it.
Add a pint of fluid at a time until the transmission dipstick reads full.
See if that fixes your problem.
If not, you will need a transmission replacement or overhaul.
Be prepared for big expense.
God bless your efforts.

Coming home jimmy slowed down by itself to a stop. engine runs but it wont move in any gear

Did you look underneath for leaks ,check the dipstick?
Sounds like you are completely out of transmission fluid which does not sound good .
Adding SeaFoam probably didn't help either if it was already low or leaking ,never trust those supposed bottled leak sealers !
Hopefully you didn't drive it too far ,if you haven't I would have it towed home and fill it up with tranny fluid a quart at a time ,check it after the second bottle on the dipstick and after every one after until you see any improvement (all the while looking for leaks underneath !! ) Hopefully you haven't burned up your transmission.

It wont down shift

Whens the last time you changed tranny filter and fluid. it may be the vacuum modulator or your bands inside the tranny. Pull out your tranny dipstick when running and check level of tranny fluid. Add dextron II of needed. Smell the tranny fluid on dipstick to see if tranny fluid is burndt. if you change filter and fluid, add a can of trans-x to the fluid. Will help seals in tranny.

Check transmission light comes on and it gives me a skip how do i check it

CHECK THE FLUID LEVEL FOR STARTERS! THE DIPSTICK SHOULD BE LOCATED TO THE PASS SIDE OF THE MOTOR ON REAR WHEEL DRIVE CARS, AND TO THE FRONT, ON FRONT WHEEL DRIVE CARS! IF THE FLUID SHOWS FULL ON THE DIPSTICK, SMELL IT TO SEE IF THE FLIUD SMELLS BURNED! YOU MAY NEED TO CHANGE FILTER AND FLUID! FILTER IS INSIDE THE TRANSMISSION!

Transmission high temperature warning indicator on dash panel comes on...what should I look for?

a new car................no . when that happens, if you can pull the transmission dipstick , look for a red / pink color on the dipstick. make sure you have enough tranny fluid. also Smell the dipstick. does the fluid look grey or black and smell burned ? if so go see a transmission specialist . if not , it could be caused from a short , broken sensor on the tranny or a bad sensor.
also , it can be because your being too rough on your car. if your not hotrodding your car, check the fluid color n smell.

Smoking auto tranny

I had a similar problem with my ford 1/2 ton pulling a trailer on a grade against the wind on hot day. thought I completely fried the tranny. Let it cool off, continued the trip and drove the truck for years with no more problems. Can't explain how your dip stick was dry however. The dipstick should have been wet with foamed trans oil.
