SOURCE: Rear pinion seal replacement

You'll need to remove the yoke from the rear end, you can use a seal removal tool, to remove the seal. Make sure you properly torque the nut down that holds the yoke on.

SOURCE: What kind of tools, and how hard is it to change the pinion seal

Change the seal is not to hard but getting to the seal is. you remove the drive line bolts drop the drive line then break the Nut loose that holds the yoke on the pinion shaft. The bolt I believe is 1 and 1/4 or 1 5/16 normally they only way to get the nut loose is with an air impact wrench, if you don't have a air impact wrench buy a breaker bar that's got a one inch drive on it and buy the socket with the 1 inch drive, if the breaker bar is less than the one inch it will flex so much that you won't be able to break the nut loose. you will need a 3/8 or a 7/16 inch wrench to get the drive line off. You will also need to get a Crush bearing which goes behind the yoke and you will need a tork wrench to tighten the nut to the proper tork specifications. The seal and crush bearing will cost you at most $20.00 If you don't have the tools your talking about $100.00 in tools. You also may need a jack if your to big to get under the truck IF YOUR A GOOD SIZED GUY. hope this helps and thanks for using fixya

How to fix the rear differential pinion seal on a 98 gmc sonoma

remove the tail shaft . undo the pinion nut with a impact gun and pull the pinion off the shaft. Using a suitable tool pick the seal out of the housing. replace it with a new seal leaving it flush with the housing edge. Check the pinion for a groove where the old seal was running . If there is one ,fit a "speedie" sleeve ( from a bearing shop) or get a new pinion . reinstall the pinion and do up the nut until it touches the pinion on the shaft. Add up to a 1/4 more turn or less . Too much will over tension the spacer between the bearings and cause rapid bearing failure. Refit the tail shaft

Differential gasket

Rear cover gasket is easy. Unbolt, drain, clean and replace gasket; fill with proper gear oil. Pinion seal on the front of the differential, different matter. If its the pinion seal leaking, take it to a shop with experienced techs.

2000 Chevy Express 1500 Rear End Problem Had Pinion seal replace and universals. After 400 miles has bearing sound in rear. Took it in and it was found that pinion nut was too tight. Shop replaced...

Sounds like the original wear pattern of the ring and pinion was disturbed when the pinion was tightened too much. Once a wear pattern is set in the gears you can't really change it. It might be the ring and pinion wearing that you are hearing and not a bearing at all. It's not the worst thing in the world but will cause the ring and pinion to wear improperly and is annoying. Differential work needs to be done by someone that really knows their stuff to avoid these little problems.

2005 Mercury Mountaineer rear end whine, how hard to fix

Before you do this you might want to try fresh gear lube. On Ford products they use a synthetic additive in the rear and not in the front 4x4 axle.
The next thing would be to determine if it is a wheel bearing or a pinion bearing. You have to pull the axles and eliminate them as the problem. You might get lucky and not need to do the pinion.
The technical part of shimming the pinion gears with replacing the pinion bearing is about the worst part of the job. You won't know about the gears until you see them. You will need extra shims on hand.
It is a moderate job for two people. If you have all the parts it can be done in a day.

Leak at rear diff (pinion seal?) 03 4X4 ford ranger

the part is called the pinion flange seal, pull the drive shaft, remove the large nut on the flange the drive shaft connects to and remove the flange, then pry out the old seal and lube the lip of the new seal with motor oil and press it into the opening. The 7.5 hour estimate is way wrong, about 1.5 hours labor and $4 for the part.
