Question about 1993 Ford F350

1 Answer

1994 f-350 7.3 turbo diesel.tach reading 0 rpm's at idle speed.

This is causing the od light to blink at idle speed and trans to shift funny sometimes.step on gas and light stops blinking.let off gas and coast.....tach goes back to 0 and light blinks until I hit gas again.Took it to trans shop and they did eec test and trans is good.they said that it reads bad throttle position censor.pulled it and tested ok.experienced trans guy said these trucks get a short somewhere in harness causing problem.Has anyone experienced similar problem to help so I can go directly to source and save $$$$$$$
Please help

Yea the 93 to 95 trucks never had a tach that works very long
and first the Tach does not make the od light blink or ck engine lgt
the crank trigger does this little thing is located right in middle front of engine between the vac pump and pwr steering pmp looks like a brass bolt with wires comming out of the back of it costs about 30 bucks (don't forget the locktite blue)
now that should fix the od lights and the ck engine but it may not fix the tach thats done in the tach driver module on back of tach in dash
you can replace this but my vote it's too expensive I did mine just fine with a after market one(50 bucks), bolted it right in front of old one, it hooks up super easy gets it's signal off the alternator stator

im sort of suprized it starts ok with a bad crank trig (eec needs to see +50 rpm to start fuel flow to injectors )

any good shop with a eec scanner can see this in just seconds

Tach runs too high

Engine speed is determined from crank or cam sensor. You most likely have a cluster issue.

Yes it can be what it is doing is called hunting, As for your RPM tach it has nothing to do with it, Now your transmission is a 4L60 and YES it does need a tach signal or the RPM signal it doesnt matter if your Tach gauge doest work but it need the tach signal for the transmission to work. And NO there is NO VSS it needs TACH. or it will hunt for a shift that is why its doing this.Youll need to restor the TACH to the transmission so it can shift properly, Now youll either have a 4pin connection,1 wire or youll have a 4 pin 2 wire connection or youll have a 4 pin 3 wire connection This transmission need tach signal so bear with me i am going to some how draw it pretend your looking at the switch. connection

Cruising speed rpm should be roughly 2200 rpm If OD (lockup) is not engaging it will be running at about 3,000rpm.
If it was staying engaged, you would not have a problem at cruising speed but would be "lugging" when taking off from a standstill. OD should come on at about 45mph and the tach should show a drop in rpm.

O.D light blinks, won't shift, runs rough at low rpms 2003 F-150

This is likely your electronic speed sensor. On my 2003 F150 it would rev quite high before finally shifting into 2nd. and my O.D light would blink also. The speed sensor is located under the vehicle about halfway back on the frame on the passenger side. The part costs about $70 and is a fairly easy repair.

THE IDLE SPEED SENSOR SOUNDS LIKE IT IS FAILING. THE IDLE SPEED SOLENOID CAN PREVENT THE TRANS FROM SHIFTING AT DESIGNATED RPM'S. THE THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR WORKS IN CONJUCTION WITH THE IDLE SPEED SENSOR TO TELL THE COMPUTER THE DEMAND FOR FUEL AND THUS SHIFTING THE TRANS AFTER THE RPMS HAVE REACHED ALMOST REDLINE. TRY CHANGING THE SENSOR AND YOU WILL HAVE SOLVED THE NO SHIFT PROBLEM. THANKS FOR USING FIX-YA AND FOR AN HONEST RATING. PLEASE KEEP ME POSTED. GOOD LUCK

1989 f250 with auto trans. the tach quit and the does not shift

Had the transmission serviced in a while? would be a good idea to have someone look at it for you. I wouldn't continue to drive it until you do a diagnostic and have it properly serviced. Transmissions on that truck could cost you upwards of $7,500. and I think you would prefer spending the $ 350. it would cost for a servicing.

1994 Ford F250 Turbo Diesel 7.3 l Overdrive blinking

ford diesels from that year had a funky problem getting the crank triggers to work 100% of the time the software fix they refer to might be the one that alloud a poorer quality signal from the crank trigger to work , this is not a fix but a work around (no good)

first verify that a fault for the crank trigger sensor is held in memory with a scan tool (there not that expensive now)
if so replace it and don't forget to seal it with locktite blue (or it'll unscrew itself)
the trans od needs to see the crank trigger signal to determine "load" to high no Od bad signal makes eec go into can't decide mode and drops in/out of od
ohh a dead giveaway it's the sensor your tach will bounce (allot) at a fixed engine speed (2000 rpm)

also i just looked there's a TSB on throttle posisition sensors(oil vapor intrusion) as well affecting Od on transmissions but that being bad will make engine speed surge too and you did'nt mention that ?

yea EEC test is the way to go but get your own
