Check vacum on trans it must be leaking or bad

Testimonial: "Ok i have "smoke tested it before but not sure if I did it right. Also it's a 1988 ford bronco II, I messed up on the thing. Any other idea's of what it could be?"

Ok thank you! I have tried checking it by blowing smoke into it, but the pressure is too much to even blow into. How else would I check it? (btw I just tried blowing ciggarette smoke into the vacuum line, I saw the trick online) Didn't help or work though. Should I pull the hose off and check for fluid in it? And any thoughts on the shift modulator? I heard that could have something to do with it, How would I check into all that without seeing a mechanic?

A couple things come to mind. First, if the new used trtansmission sat around for an extended period of time your problem could just be scale or rust that will burn off soon and things will be okay. Second, back in those days a lot of Ford transmissions had bands that could be adjusted and that may be needed here. A call to a friendly service manager couild tell if you had them and maybe even how to do it. Also a copy of a Haynes manual for your truck should give you that info.
You could also add a bottle of Lucas transmission treatment. This sure wouldn't hurt, especially since it is a used transmission with who knows how many miles on it. This is good stuff. Use the whole bottle.

1988 FORD BRONCO ii- My Bronco has only about 80,000 origional miles on it. Here is the problem: We bought this car and was told that it sat in a somewhat swampy type area for a few years (not sure if that...

Have a pressure test done on the transmission to check for internal problems such as pump failure/blocked filter. If you have to rev it hard to get going then there is not enough pressure to close the clutches and/or bands. The box from the wreckers may have been on the way out when you got it. Remove the sump and check for material in the sump such as band linings. Check that the band actuator has not cracked and is loosing pressure.

1988 Ford Bronco Transmission Issues

is the idle speed correct? do you shift into second before trying to engage reverse?, is the clutch ok, this is most likely not the trans at all but one of the above issues, the clutch is my guess.

It will catch and then let go in first gear and in reverse

the tran is either low on fluid or more likely the forward reverse clutch pack in the auto trans is worn out, in that case you will need an overhaul. My experience: 20 years in a Ford dealer

When going throught the gears forward sometimes it takes more muscle to change particularly 3 to 4 or 4 to 5 ..... sometimes it is easy to change gear and sometimes it seems to take more effort ....kind of...

try double clutching(come out of 3rd then push clutch twice b-4 going to 4th. if this works your clutch slave may be weak or pressure plate is worn. Try shifting from 1st-3rd if engine revs like your in neutral replace clutch. when going 1st-3rd engine should catch and cause vehicle to buck&stumble. (check level of clutch master cylinder)
