Transaxle wont shift into reverse it tries to go in but it sounds like it wont fully engage and the gears are grinding

Sounds like a trans problem(internal problem) the trans should be removed and the case opened up to inspect the reverse selector and gear assembly...while its apart, may as well inspect the entire transmission internal parts,, gears , syncronizers , etc... even may as well have the clutch replaced since the trans will be out..save some money on labor

    if i take the seliond out and put them back in the it will go into gear but if i sut the car off it does again

Sounds like your transfer case in neutral. You have to engage the transfer case back into gear then shift selector to drive or reverse. When your transfer is in neutral the transmission will not operate. Good luck.

91 legacy wont go into gear runs and you can shift thru the gears push in and let out clutch nothing get a kittle grind sound when you try reverse

could be shift fork thats in the tranny or it you could have snapped the main shaft not an easy fix you might want an expert mechanic to take a look at it good luck

What is it when in reverse the automatic transmission on a 1999 Camaro grinds?

Reverse is not "synchronized" forward gears are, so it does make some noise, try shifting to 2nd before engaging reverse to slow gear rotation and limit gear clash or grind.

Definitely not good. The transmission is slipping internally due to worn gears and clutch packs. It will have to come out for rebuilding, IMO. Have a transmission shop check it out.

Manual transmission.at times the car will not shift into first gear.once the car starts to roll it then shifts when forced.Followed by a loud grinding sound.

The "grinding" sound leads me to believe that your clutch is not completely disengaging. Does it also do it in Reverse? First gear and reverse gear is not syncronized. Sometimes it helps to go to reverse, then bring it back to first to keep from having to force the thing into gear. Forcing it will bend the shifting fork inside the transmission. If it has been forced a few times, you may allready have a bent fork. Anyway, if it is also "grinding" going into Reverse, it is time for a clutch.

Hello. As you know, the transmission is one of the more sophisticated components in any auto. It takes the most transmission pressure to engage reverse, third, and fourth gear in an auto tranny. In an auto tranny, the shifter is connected to a linkage that manually shifts between the different gears in the transmission. When you shift into reverse, all transmission pressure is concentrated to engage reverse. When you shift to drive the transmission will operate normally, building pressure until it can shift into the next gear. With third, second, or first gear selected it will lock out all higher gears (Unless the TCU detects overrevving of the engine, in which case it will override gear selection and upshift to avoid engine damage). All the TCU does in a modern auto tranny is control shift points. Years and years ago, shifting was controlled by a spring attached to the gas pedal. When the gas pedal was depressed, the spring would expand. As tranny pressure grew, the spring would become compressed until it was fully compressed, engaging the next gear. The harder you stepped on the gas, the longer you went until the tranny shifted. In modern transmissions the TCU dictates shift points, and not much else. The TCU will also control when the torque converter will lock, but that's where it's duties end. The problem with engaging reverse is either a linkage issue, or a problem with the pump not building enough pressure to fully engage reverse.

Try putting the shifter in reverse, holding the brakes firmly, and giving the car gas. If the car reaches a higher RPM and suddenly slams into reverse it is the pump. The pump will only build enough pressure to engage reverse with higher RPM's. If the pump is severly damaged it won't engage at all, but if this is the case it probably won't engage third or fourth gear either at that point. If the problem is with the linkage, reverse just won't engage whatsoever, despite RPM's. I'd say start with the shift linkage. If it's bent or misadjusted it could cause reverse to not be fully engaged. The TCU doesn't control reverse at all, since there are no shift points and no need for the torque converter to lock.

is the idle speed correct? do you shift into second before trying to engage reverse?, is the clutch ok, this is most likely not the trans at all but one of the above issues, the clutch is my guess.

1998 jeep wrangler dont shift into 1st or reverse

I will bet it grinds when you try to engage first or reverse. When this happened on my car, I adjusted the clutch and it improved. You need about a half inch of free play when you first touch the pedal with your foot. If you have a slave cylinder, (hydraulic clutch). You may need to bleed the system. With air in the system, you can't get enough clutch to fully disengage the trans from the motor.(Clutch and pressure plate) It's like you only pushed down half way on the pedal. If it's not hydraulic, it should be adjusted with wrenches. If clutch is fine, It could be a loose shift linkage. It would seem extra sloppy when moving shifter, It would just not go in gear, with out the grinding.Hope this helps. lbreen
