Carb adj F-150 1985 1 barrel

Maybe the float is stuck or needs adjustment? Maybe a carb kit?
Holley has their own web site, at the bottom of page there is technical resources--library. I just briefly took a look, holley.com

air flow vane adj to the return spring.
gas flow adj on front bottom screws ,not too lean. close it down . back off 3 turns. an try.
then the vacuum advance big knobby thing with black plastic an one screw on side of the carb with a vac hose to it. when u gun it .adjusts points firing.

do it have an oil control vale just a shot in the dark good luck

That's too bad. Unfortunately the repair shop is probably right. Take it to a couple other shops for a quote just to be sure.

You need to rebuild the carburetor. As it is a 1 barrel its relatively easy to rebuild if you can find a kit, but it is the original carb and difficult to find parts. You may also consider buying a Holley 2 barrel carb - it will bolt right on and give you more power, and they are much more common and easier to find rebuild kits and parts. It's possible you may need an adapter plate, depending on the configuration of your intake manifold, but that will be easy to find. You can either shop online or buy from your local auto parts store or high performance shop. That old 1 barrel has had its day and I'm sure it served you well,but I think I would upgrade to a newer carb myself.You may be able to clean it out using carb cleaner spray but it would be hard to clear out that clogged jet that is causing your trouble, and then you will likely tear the gasket when you take the top off that carb.

when the engine light come on engine computer detect problem in the engine.
I would like to advice you to scan the computer it can be sensors.
It can be EGR is blocked also air flow mas sensor.

Find a car-repair work shop which is using diagnostic equipment to solve problem.

Most likely you have a Holley carb. You may have a 460 engine. If you have the carb with a big vacuum pot in front of the carb, then you have a RPM governor. The RPM governor will work against the 4 barrel.

The main mixture for the idle jets can be adjusted like any old style carb. You may have plastic caps over the idle screws but take them off. Then use a vacuum gauge on any intake fitting and proceed to read the vacuum level as you turn the mixture screws. You want the mixture to reach a maximum RPM, then evenly turn the screw in until the RPM drops slighty and then balance for smoothest idle.

After this step adjust curb idle and see if this helps when the 4 barrel kicks in. Holley has different springs for the vacuum actuated secondaries and they are color coded. If the carb is original it should be right, but if the carb is of unknown origin you can check the proper vacuum spring, main jet, power valve and so on in a good Holley book. The mechanical secondaries are also listed with clearances to hand adjust.

By adjusting the mixture screws you have set the engine to idle just below peak vacuum pressure. This means you should have more vacuum to work the secondaries.

clog in fuel injectors or vacume leaks start with break booster most of time this would be it
