I'm getting ready to take my car in on Saturday for engine rattle. I'm a 3 yr-old woman and want to have some idea of what the problem is before I take it in.
Basically, the engine rattles when I accelerate - seems to do it more when I get above 3,000 RPM. It does not rattle when the engine is idling or when I let off the gas. Any ideas what the problem is and what it might cost?
My 2001 makes a high pitched noise sounds like it is coming from the left side of the engine. It comes and goes at random and does not increase or decrease with RPM. Kinda like shzzzz shzzzzzz shzzzzzz shzzzz last for a while and goes away.
I agree with Toyota Ed, you may be experiencing 'pinking' or pre ignition which can be caused by a number of things such as:
1. Poor quality fuel
2. Wrong grade of fuel ( stop using 87 and try 89 to see if the problem stops)
3.Faulty ignition timing.
4.Air leak causing the fuel mixture to run lean (weak)
5.Headgasket starting to fail, water is turning to steam and is escaping into one or more cylinders which again make the fuel mixture lean (weak)
My advice is first check you are not loosing any water/coolant and that there are no **** vacuum/air lines.
I would have the gas filter replace.have them put
the code reader on the car and check for poss.code
I'm experiencing the same problem. Did you identify the problem?
I hope that you got it sorted! But i would just like to say i have the same problem and found that it was not 'pinking'. I had my mecahnic look at the car and i had, I had loose parts which had come away - mainly the heat shield which was causing my car to rattle when driving - mainly chainging gear and high rev. It was worse when cold. I had this welded back in pplace and it has not made a sound since! My car is 2001 toyota Mr2
I hope this helps - but get someone to have alook at it!

The check engine light is not on and yes, it does sound like a tin of loose nails - but the rattle is very fast
THANKS!
Does it sound like a load of loose nails rattling round in a tin?
Please advise if the check engine light is on.
If it is not on, I would stop uing 87 octane fuel and use 89 octane.
