Run fault codes and check for sensor. servo problem. Have a pressure test done on the transmission to check for band/clutch problems.

Drop the pan, odds are the shift solenoid is out, its located at the front of the trans on the driver side. I'm sure your check engine light is on that will comment about the timing/shift solenoid being bad. I had the same problem with mine. The solenoid had plastic coming out of the inside. To remove it you'll find a small C clip holding it in, just take a small screw driver and pull the clip out. The part cost me like $36 from my local dealership. And its a longer solenoid. I believe its the 3-2 downshift solenoid. I do have the part number if you need it.

Hi, yes I just had the same problem and the clutch packs inside the transmission are slipping. I had to replace all the clutch packs as well as the bands. The parts for this job really aren't that expensive. you could get everything you need for less than 300 bucks. however labor is where they kill you. It's about a 10 hour job or maybe 12 depending on application. average shop rate 80 an hour you looking at 900 dollars labor plus parts. if your mechanically inclined and have tools you could take your time and do it yourself. you can buy a step by step DVD for your specific application. other wise I would call around to transmission shops. their is a slight chance it may also be your solenoid pack. the best way to confirm is to have a transmission line pressure test done. Your transmission has 3 shift rails...
1st - 2nd
3rd -4th
5th- Reverse
If your 3rd gear doesn't work , you have an internal transmission problem, such as a syncronizer, or similar fail... There is not much you can fix, without removeing the transmission.
