Is it the alternator? The other day i got in my car to go up the street for coffee and it started up just fine, i noticed the radio wouldn't turn off but i didn't think anything of it. when i got to the end of my street and to my first stop the car started shaking back and forth as if i was bleeding in new breaks, i continued to drive and nothing happened as i gained speed, just every time i stopped the car would shake, when i got to the coffee shop i noticed a loud whistling sound coming from the engine on the side of the alternator and i put the car in the park to stop the shaking but the noise still continued. i called my husband to meet me outside so he could see what the car was doing and when i got home i pulled the car up with it still running he opened the door and the inside light started pulsing and so did the head lights, when he shut the door the pulsing stopped. my husband thinks its the alternator or the tension belt. i have a 2002 nissian altima 2.5 .. i have limited funds and need to order a part soon because no place around me carries the alternator or the tension belt and i fear the cars gonna go if i wait to long, i have one car and a 10 mile drive to and from work every single day. i have no check engine lights on and the car ran completely smooth that morning . the alternator is located behind the wheel in my car and my husband doesn't know how to pull off the tensioner belt to get the alternator tested . has anyone else heard of this problem or knows any ways to test what is going on. thank you

Unfortunately does sound like your alternator and the pulsing is most common to overcharging if you can get a multimeter put it on to dc volts 20volt range connect to the battery and with the engine running should read 13.6 volts to max 14.2 volts get someone to bring revs up on car to around 2500 revs and charge rate should still be inside these readings if either side of these you have a charging problem ,if the drive belt is visible see if you can see it bouncing if not quick trip to repair shop for diagnosis will be able to tell in couple of minutes and shouldn't be charged for diagnosis

SOURCE: Engine shakes and can not accelerate as quick when starts

If the engine light is on, a code scanner needs to be connected to it to find out why the light is on. It could be one of the sensors causing it. Take to autozone or advanced auto if there is one near you, if not call a repair shop that can do it. Autozone and advanced don't charge. Takes about 30 seconds.

Check for loose/ dirty battery connections. Check condition/ tension of the alternator drive belt. It would appear that there is a loose wire some where that is causing an intermittent power flow to the cpu

Check your alternator by starting engine and removing negative battery cable while running. If engine stops, replace alternator.

Sounds like the battery. If its not holding power it will cause the car to die. The alternator will charge the battery and keep power to the vehicle, but the battery is also apart of the process.

Replace the battery and check the battery cables for corrosion. At autozone or wherever you go to get a new battery get some terminal grease/protector for your battery. Its like .99 for a packet and will help keep your connections to the battery from corrosion.

When your battery light comes on it is telling you that your ALTERNATOR is not charging your battery! So you need to replace the alternator.

You can verify that it is bad by taking the car or just the alternator to an auto parts store and having them test it for you for free.

My 2002 Honda Civic starts - but slowly and the lights flicker

Well it absolutely sounds like an alternator issue. But i noticed you said "in the rain" correct? See this is where it gets tricky for most folks. But ill tell ya how to resolve this, if you arent having problems now things are gonna be just fine. I mean if you got up the next morning and th ecar did normal, then evidentally an electrical component had some moisture in it but has dried out now,so if it was the alternator the problem would only worsen, and within a few days your battery would fail. So I think you will be just fine
